Mazda’s futuristic concepts may have grabbed most of the attention at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The spotlight also shone on the all-new Mazda CX-5 as it went on public display for the first time since its earlier reveal.
Although Mazda had already shared key details and images of the next-generation CX-5, this was the first time visitors could see the SUV in person.
Familiar name, more innovative platform

The new Mazda CX-5 continues to build on its winning formula, with a sharper design and a more spacious interior. This model is critical, as the nameplate has sold over 4.5 million units globally. Mazda is not reinventing the wheel but evolving a proven winner.
Key updates for the new Mazda CX-5 include:
- Refined KODO design and a more spacious interior.
- Enhanced “Jinba-ittai” driving dynamics.
- Built on the new electronic platform, “MAZDA E/E ARCHITECTURE+”, which promises faster computing and enables future software-upgradable features.
A refined evolution, not a revolution

Mazda hasn’t reinvented the CX-5, and that’s probably intentional. Instead, it has refined it, leaning into the traits that made the SUV a global hit: balanced dynamics, premium feel, and everyday usability. The design looks sharper, but the silhouette remains recognisable, a reminder that Mazda values continuity as much as innovation.
Setting the tone for Mazda’s next chapter

With the new CX-5, Mazda seems to be bridging its heritage with its horizon, a stable combustion-based lineup coexisting with visionary electrified models like the Vision X-Coupe, which revives the rotary dream, and the Vision X-Compact, a sentient AI-driven companion concept.
Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s President and CEO, summed it up best at the show: “The joy of driving fuels a sustainable tomorrow.” For Mazda, that “joy” still has four wheels, a driver’s seat, and thankfully, a steering wheel.
