Buying a used car today usually involves opening far too many tabs. One listing looks cheaper, another has lower kilometres, and a third appears identical until you notice differences in condition, features or location. Even after choosing the “right” car, many buyers are still left wondering whether they could have found a better deal elsewhere.
That uncertainty is one reason Price Match Guarantees are becoming increasingly common across Australia’s automotive retail space. Designed to reassure buyers during the comparison process, a Price Match Guarantee allows customers to request a price review if they find a comparable vehicle advertised cheaper elsewhere.
While the idea sounds straightforward, the fine print can vary significantly depending on the dealership or online retailer.
How does a Price Match Guarantee work?

In most cases, a buyer needs to find a comparable vehicle listed at a lower advertised price by another eligible dealer. The retailer will then review whether both vehicles are genuinely comparable. That comparison usually includes factors such as:
- make and model
- model year
- variant or trim level
- transmission type
- fuel type
- drivetrain configuration
- kilometres travelled
- vehicle condition
- state or location
Some businesses may also request additional documents such as service history records, PPSR reports or proof of the competing listing. If the claim satisfies the retailer’s eligibility criteria, the seller may match the lower price or offer a partial reduction.

Why are Price Match Guarantees becoming more popular?
Used-car prices can vary noticeably between dealerships, platforms and states, even for vehicles that appear nearly identical on paper. For buyers, that creates two major concerns:
- overpaying
- missing out on a better deal elsewhere
A Price Match Guarantee is designed to reduce some of that uncertainty. It can also simplify negotiations for buyers who prefer transparent pricing rather than extended bargaining. At the same time, dealerships and online retailers benefit by giving customers an added reason to stay on their platform instead of continuing to shop elsewhere.

What buyers should check before submitting a claim

Not every cheaper listing will qualify for a price match. In many cases, the competing vehicle must meet strict like-for-like criteria. Two vehicles with the same badge may still differ significantly in specification, condition or ownership history. Buyers should also pay attention to:
- whether the competing seller is an eligible licensed dealer
- differences in on-road costs
- state-based pricing differences
- service history availability
- accident or repair history
- promotional exclusions
- finance or trade-in conditions attached to the deal
Some retailers may also exclude:
- commercial vehicles
- fleet purchases
- business buyers
- auction listings
- private sellers

How Cars24’s Price Match Guarantee works
Cars24 Australia recently introduced a Price Match Guarantee for selected eligible pre-owned vehicles listed on its platform. According to the company, buyers can submit a claim if they find a comparable vehicle listed cheaper by an eligible Australian dealer.
Cars24 says the comparison considers factors such as:
- same make and model
- same model year
- comparable kilometres
- same state
- matching variant specifications
Eligible buyers must submit the claim within five calendar days of the booking initiation date and before paying the Token Payment. The company also notes that submitting a claim does not reserve the vehicle, meaning another buyer may still purchase the car first.
Cars24 says successful claims may receive a price reduction of up to AUD $2,500, depending on eligibility and review outcomes.
Price is only one part of the buying decision

While a Price Match Guarantee may help buyers feel more confident about pricing, it should not be the only factor influencing a purchase decision. Vehicle condition, ownership history, inspection quality, warranty coverage and return policies can all matter just as much as the advertised price itself.
Many retailers now combine Price Match programs with additional buyer protections. In Cars24’s case, eligible vehicles also include a 300-point inspection process and access to the company’s 30-Day Return Guarantee. For buyers navigating Australia’s increasingly competitive used-car market, Price Match Guarantees are likely to become a more common part of the online car-shopping experience.
