The 2019 to 2023 Ford Escape PHEV has been recalled in Australia over the risk of a loss of power or a vehicle fire hazard. This could happen due to a manufacturing defect in the battery cell modules, which could cause an internal short circuit.

The Ford Escape PHEV, or specifically ST-Line PHEV, has been discontinued in Australia since the end of 2023. The Escape PHEV is a plug-in hybrid electric mid-size SUV and is Ford’s first electrified vehicle sold locally. It competed in the already busy Australian mid-size SUV segment.

What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?

Ford Escape PHEV battery percentage and range

Due to a manufacturing issue, the battery cell modules inside the high-voltage battery may be defective and can cause an internal short circuit. A short circuit could:

  • Cause a loss of driving power
  • Lead to battery thermal venting while charging, or
  • Potentially cause a vehicle fire

Owners are advised not to charge the battery above 80% and to drive only in Auto EV mode until a repair is available. A loss of power or a vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users, and it may also cause property damage.
