Bentley Motors has issued a recall for 16 Bentayga Hybrids in Australia after identifying a critical defect that could cause the vehicle’s high-voltage battery to overheat and catch fire while charging. This affects the models built in 2023 featuring a 3-litre V6 engine paired to a lithium-ion battery and electric motor hybrid setup for up to 40km of EV range in the luxury SUV.
What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?

The core issue lies in a hardware defect within the Bentayga Hybrid’s high-voltage battery system. Under certain conditions, the battery may discharge while the vehicle is connected to a charger. This can generate excessive heat, potentially leading to thermal runaway and igniting a vehicle fire.
A fire could cause injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, or bystanders. Property damage poses an additional concern, particularly for vehicles parked in attached garages or residential structures where fire could spread rapidly to living spaces.
