If you’ve been waiting for a budget-friendly city hatchback that doesn’t skimp on tech or safety, MG might have just delivered (again). The new MG 3 Vibe has officially rolled into Australian showrooms, grabbing headlines as the country’s cheapest new automatic car—yours for $21,990 drive-away. Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 81kW and 142Nm, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive.

But there’s more to the story than just the price tag.

Unexpected safety upgrades for MG hatchback

The new MG 3 Vibe entry-level trim sits below the existing MG 3 Excite and slashes nearly $900 off the previous base price. However, in a surprising turn, the MG 3 Vibe is currently the only MG 3 variant equipped with two key safety features: a front centre airbag and a driver monitoring system.

These additions come after the MG 3’s disappointing 3-star ANCAP rating in 2023. Strangely, these critical upgrades aren’t yet available on higher-spec models like the Excite, raising eyebrows and questions. Is MG phasing in updates for fresh stock coming up next and simply clearing out older stock for now? Stay tuned for the latest updates.

The trade-off: Where MG saved (and spent)

What you get:

The new MG 3 Vibe trim still comes with the following features and conveniences:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Adaptive cruise control & lane-keep assist
  • Seven airbags (including the new front-centre one)
  • Driver monitoring camera (alerts if you look away from the road)

What you lose:

Here are the features you will need to extend your budget for to the MG 3 Excite:

  • Blind-spot monitoring & rear cross-traffic alert (standard on Picanto)
  • Alloy wheels (replaced with 15-inch steel rims + hubcaps)
  • Space-saver spare (tyre repair kit only)
  • Push-button start, rear air vents, auto-folding mirrors

Is it a great deal or a clever distraction?

The MG 3 Vibe is a clear win for buyers seeking an entry-level new car under $25K with solid tech and critical safety features. But with some creature comforts missing, it’s a bit of a gamble.
Now available nationwide, though how long it stays the cheapest remains to be seen
