MG is expanding its mid-size SUV range in Australia with the launch of the 2025 MG HS Hybrid+, its first petrol-electric model that doesn’t require a plug point. Set to arrive in showrooms this September, the new MG HS Hybrid+ undercuts major rivals like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid while offering more power and a comprehensive range of equipment across two variants.

How much is the HS Hybrid+?

Two trim levels will be available at launch for the latest MG hybrid offering, prices are:

  • MG HS Hybrid+ Excite – $42,990 drive-away
  • MG HS Hybrid+ Essence – $46,990 drive-away

These prices represent a $6,000 premium over their petrol-only counterparts, which start at $36,990 and $40,990, respectively.

Crucially, the HS Hybrid+ Excite is cheaper than the Toyota RAV4 GX Hybrid (from $42,260 plus on-road costs) and GXL Hybrid (from $45,810 plus ORC). It’s also positioned close to rivals like the GWM Haval H6 Hybrid, which starts at $42,490 drive-away (Lux) and $45,990 (Ultra).

The MG HS Hybrid+ features a closed-loop (series) hybrid system. Let’s take a look at the technical specs and how they compare to the popular Toyota hybrid SUV.

Australian arrival and final thoughts

The 2025 MG HS Hybrid+ is scheduled to hit Australian showrooms in September, offering buyers a well-equipped and competitively priced hybrid SUV alternative. With stronger outputs than the RAV4 Hybrid and generous standard kit across both trims, MG is aiming to shake up the mid-size hybrid SUV market, even if it sacrifices a bit on fuel economy.

Whether value and power are enough to sway buyers away from Toyota’s reliability or Haval’s tech-laden cabins remains to be seen, but MG’s latest is well worth a look.
