The sleek and practical Subaru Impreza has earned a five-star ANCAP safety rating following a round of rigorous testing and updates introduced for Model Year 2025 (MY25). The rating applies to petrol Subaru Impreza models built from April 2025, which are available across Australia and New Zealand from June 2025.
With a strong focus on occupant and pedestrian protection, the updated Subaru Impreza (G6 series) offers enhanced safety performance.
The Subaru Impreza shares much of its structural underpinnings with the Subaru Crosstrek, allowing for some test data to be shared across both models, but it still underwent individual assessments to verify its performance.
A centre airbag is now included as standard between the front seats. While it adds another layer of protection in side-impact scenarios, its effectiveness in tests was considered mixed.

2025 Subaru Impreza safety scores
Adult Occupant Protection: 83%
The Subaru Impreza delivered good protection for both driver and passenger in a variety of crash scenarios. Top marks were achieved in side impact and full-width frontal tests, confirming a solid cabin structure and effective restraint systems.
Child Occupant Protection: 91%
Top scores were recorded in tests involving child dummies, representing six- and ten-year-olds. The second row includes ISOFIX mounts and top tether anchorages, making the Subaru Impreza child-seat friendly.
Vulnerable Road User Protection: 84%
The Subaru Impreza performed well in pedestrian impact tests, particularly for head and lower leg protection. However, stiff windscreen pillars resulted in poor scores in those areas. On the tech side, its crash avoidance systems successfully identified and responded to pedestrians and cyclists in forward-travel situations.
Safety Assist: 73%
The Subaru Impreza is equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight suite, which includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, speed sign recognition, and a driver monitoring system that can detect signs of drowsiness or distraction. It lost most points in this field due to weak performance of the AEB in the path of oncoming vehicles and for junction crossings.

Safer by design
While the Subaru Impreza and Crosstrek are closely related under the skin, pedestrian protection testing revealed some differences. The Subaru Impreza provided slightly better head and lower leg protection, thanks to its lower-profile bonnet and bumper design, though its upper leg (femur) protection was slightly lower than the Crosstrek’s.
The rating only applies to petrol-powered MY25 Subaru Impreza vehicles built from April 2025 onwards. Earlier models (MY24 and prior) are not included in this assessment.

Subaru’s statement
“The Subaru Impreza continues to offer strong safety performance and remains a solid choice for everyday drivers,” said Carla Hoorweg, Chief Executive Officer of ANCAP.
With a 5-star rating now confirmed, the 2025 Subaru Impreza blends modern safety, comfort, and style, making it a smart and secure choice for Australian and New Zealand roads.
