Another contender has entered Australia’s fast-growing, affordable EV segment, with Chinese carmaker GAC confirming its Aion UT electric hatchback will be available in local showrooms in 2026. Set to arrive between April and June 2026, the GAC Aion UT will become the brand’s second fully electric model in Australia, joining the Aion V electric SUV as part of a broader local expansion strategy.
Australia’s affordable EV hatchback segment

The GAC Aion UT is aimed squarely at the small electric hatchback market, where it will compete against established rivals such as the BYD Dolphin, MG 4, and GWM Ora.
While Australian pricing has not yet been announced, competitors currently start from $29,990 plus on-road costs for the BYD Dolphin Essential. However, the GAC Aion UT is unlikely to undercut the recently launched BYD Atto 1, which holds the title of Australia’s cheapest EV at $23,990 plus on-road costs.
Given its larger size and longer driving range, the GAC is expected to sit slightly higher in the pricing hierarchy.

Interior technology and features
Inside, the GAC Aion UT adopts a minimalist cabin layout, highlighted by a dual-screen setup:
- 14.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen
- 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster
The design prioritises simplicity and urban usability, positioning the Aion UT as a city-focused electric hatchback for private buyers and fleets alike.
Part of GAC’s long-term Australian expansion

The GAC Aion UT forms part of GAC’s broader ambition to become a major player in the Australian market.
“Our strategy of ‘In Australia, For Australia’ will see GAC bring more than 10 models to the Australian market in the coming five years,” said Kevin Shu, President of GAC Australia.
“The GAC Aion UT showcases the strength of GAC’s product portfolio, combining elegant design with clever technology that genuinely enhances daily life.” GAC officially entered Australia in October 2025, launching with the Aion V electric SUV, M8 PHEV people mover, and Emzoom petrol SUV.
Local testing and launch timeline
A right-hand-drive GAC Aion UT prototype was spotted testing in Sydney in September 2025, signalling early preparation for an Australian release.
More detailed pricing, specifications, and equipment levels are expected to be announced closer to the vehicle’s local launch in Q2 2026.
