Mazda’s best-selling SUV is due for a big refresh, and thanks to a leaked studio image from Car Design News on Instagram before the post was deleted shortly after, we’ve got our first proper look at the next-generation CX-5. The 2026 model brings fresh styling, a focus on electrification, and a more premium interior.

First look: A new face for a familiar name
The leaked image reveals a cleaner, sharper design that aligns the CX-5 with newer models in the lineup, such as the Mazda CX-60 and the electric Mazda 6e sedan. The front fascia is sleeker, with smoother lines, and the overall look is more upscale. Its rear profile remains a secret for now.
While Mazda has been shifting to a new naming structure (CX-30, CX-60, etc.), it’s expected that the CX-5 badge will stay, especially given the model’s global success.
Under the skin: Platform and size

The new CX-5 will likely continue on Mazda’s Small Product Group platform, the same one used for:
Model name | Drive options |
Mazda CX-50 | FWD / AWD |
Mazda MX-30 | FWD / AWD |
Mazda3 | FWD / AWD |
This platform suggests we’ll continue to see both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants with the 2026 Mazda CX-5. There’s also speculation that the new model will be slightly larger, bringing it closer to the Toyota RAV4 in dimensions.
Engine options: Petrol, Hybrid & Plug-In
While the specifications will be revealed closer to debut, expect a host of engine options for the 2025 Mazda CX-5. It is expected to arrive with the 2.5-litre Skyactive-G petrol engine with choice of front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. The new CX-5 is likely to get hybridised options soon after, with both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. However, the all-new Skyactive-Z engines, Mazda’s most efficient petrol powertrain yet, is set to be offered from 2027.
There’s no confirmation yet on whether the turbo-petrol or diesel options will return. The inline six-cylinder engines from the CX-60 are unlikely, as the CX-5 will retain a front-drive-biased layout.
Interior upgrades: More screens, more comfort

Mazda is aiming for a more premium feel inside the new CX-5, taking cues from its newer and more luxurious models.
Expected cabin highlights include:
Feature | Details |
Infotainment Display | 14.6-inch touchscreen (expected) |
Digital Instrument Cluster | 10.2-inch screen (expected) |
Materials | Higher-grade, soft-touch surfaces |
Cabin Design | Cleaner, more minimal layout |
When will it arrive in Australia?

Mazda hasn’t confirmed dates yet, but here’s what current timelines suggest. The global reveal is expected to take place between July and September 2025. If all goes to plan, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms by 2025 end, or early 2026.
With the official image now leaked, a full reveal doesn’t seem too far away.
In summary
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is poised to be a strong rival to the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson, featuring bold new styling, electrified powertrains, and a significant technological upgrade. While more details are expected soon, the leaked image already confirms one thing: the next CX-5 will look the part.
Stay tuned—its official debut is just around the corner.
