Is this the most exciting CX-5 yet? Mazda has just teased the all-new, third-generation CX-5 ahead of its global unveiling on Thursday, 10 July 2025 at 6:00 PM AEST. A longtime favourite in Australia’s mid-size SUV segment, the CX-5 enters its next chapter with a sleeker exterior, a more refined interior, and the first signs of hybrid tech under its bonnet.

A fresh design with familiar DNA
Mazda’s teaser images don’t reveal too much, but the silhouette hints at a more dynamic and mature look. Expect design influences from Mazda’s larger SUV siblings, such as the CX-60 and CX-90, including bolder bodywork and black exterior trims seen on higher variants. Notably, the ‘MAZDA’ script now replaces the traditional logo on the tailgate – a subtle move toward a cleaner, more premium aesthetic.
The official release describes the new model as having a “sharper design” and a “more spacious, uncluttered cabin,” aligning with reports that the 2026 CX-5 will grow in size and interior refinement.

Mild hybrid now, full hybrid later?
While many expected the new CX-5 to go all-in on hybrid power, the teaser images reveal a European-spec e-SkyActiv-G badge, suggesting a mild hybrid system at launch. This technology, already featured in Mazda’s current lineup, offers minor efficiency gains but cannot power the wheels solely on electricity.
The real game-changer might not arrive until 2027, when Mazda is expected to debut its first in-house full-hybrid system, pairing an electric motor with a next-generation SkyActiv-Z petrol engine. This full hybrid is said to offer improved fuel economy and lower emissions, finally putting Mazda in closer competition with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
Whether either hybrid system will launch in Australia remains uncertain, and the future of the 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is also unconfirmed.

Tech-focused and driver-centric
Mazda promises a cabin that’s not just more spacious, but also smarter. The third-gen CX-5 is expected to feature larger screens, modern infotainment upgrades, and more human-centric tech, built around real-world usability and the joy of driving.

When will it arrive in Australia?
The global premiere is scheduled for next week, but the new CX-5 is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms by late 2025 or early 2026.
Mazda’s most popular SUV is evolving. While it’s still holding back its full hybrid potential, the 2026 CX-5 looks set to offer sharper looks, smarter tech, and a more premium driving experience than ever before.
