The 2026 MG 4 Urban has been priced from $31,990 drive-away, becoming the most affordable electric vehicle in the brand’s Australian lineup ahead of its showroom arrival next month.

Positioned as a new entry point into the MG 4 family, the Urban variant adopts a different approach compared to the existing rear- and all-wheel-drive models, switching to a front-wheel-drive layout, a new platform, and a slightly larger body.

Despite carrying the same nameplate, the MG 4 Urban is effectively a distinct model, with unique styling and smaller battery options designed to appeal to budget-conscious EV buyers.

Pricing positions MG against key rivals

At $31,990 drive-away, the MG 4 Urban undercuts the BYD Dolphin on real-world pricing in most Australian states and territories, where the Chinese rival typically exceeds $32,000 drive-away once on-road costs are included.

However, it does not claim the title of Australia’s cheapest EV outright, with the smaller BYD Atto 1 continuing to lead the segment from $23,990 plus on-road costs.

Other key competitors include:

  • GWM Ora, priced from $33,990 drive-away
  • GAC Aion UT, offered from $30,990 drive-away for initial customers

The aggressive positioning highlights MG’s continued focus on value in the increasingly competitive affordable EV segment.

Battery options and driving range confirmed

Full specifications are yet to be detailed, but MG has confirmed the MG 4 Urban will be offered with two battery options:

  • 43kWh battery – up to 323km WLTP range
  • 54kWh battery – up to 415km WLTP range

The model also supports DC fast charging, with a claimed 10 to 80 percent recharge in 30 minutes, making it competitive with key rivals in terms of usability.

Larger footprint than the existing MG 4

Interestingly, the MG 4 Urban is larger than the rear-wheel-drive MG 4, measuring:

  • Length: 4395mm
  • Wheelbase: 2750mm

This puts it closer in size to a Toyota Corolla, and slightly ahead of the BYD Dolphin (4290mm long, 2700mm wheelbase), potentially offering more interior space and practicality.

Existing MG 4 range to continue

The current MG 4 lineup will remain on sale alongside the new Urban variant, albeit in updated form for 2026.

It will continue to offer rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations paired with a 64kWh battery, while previously available 51kWh and 77kWh options are set to be discontinued.

At present, runout MY25 MG 4 models are listed from $36,032 drive-away for the base Excite 51 in New South Wales, according to MG’s official website.

More details to come

MG has confirmed that full specifications, features, and variant details for the MG 4 Urban will be announced in the coming days, ahead of its official Australian launch.

With sharper drive-away pricing, competitive range figures, and a larger footprint, the new MG 4 Urban appears set to play a key role in expanding the brand’s foothold in Australia’s fast-growing affordable EV market.
