MG has revealed the first official details and images of its upcoming electric SUV, the MG 4X, which is set to join the broader MG 4 family.
Positioned as a new SUV addition to the lineup, the 4X appears to be a heavily updated version of the MG S5 EV already sold in markets like Australia. In China, this model is known as the ES5 and is offered alongside the MG 4 Urban, while the original MG 4 hatchback has been phased out locally.
Design and positioning
The 4X retains much of the overall shape of the S5 EV but introduces a significantly revised front-end design. It features new headlights inspired by the MG 4 Urban, now connected by a full-width light bar, along with an illuminated MG badge for a more modern look.
While interior images are yet to be revealed, reports suggest the cabin has been developed in collaboration with Oppo, hinting at a tech-focused cockpit experience.

Dimensions and platform
Regulatory filings from China have confirmed the 4X’s key dimensions, showing slight growth over the S5 EV:
| Dimensions | MG 4X |
| Length | 4500mm |
| Width | 1849mm |
| Height | 1621mm |
| Wheelbase | 2735mm |
This makes it marginally longer than the S5 EV, with a slightly extended wheelbase that could translate to improved interior space.

Powertrain and battery details
The 4X will launch with familiar electric motor options carried over from the S5 EV lineup:
| Specifications | MG 4X |
| Power (base) | 125kW |
| Power (higher variants) | 150kW |
| Drivetrain | Likely Front-wheel drive |
| Battery type | Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) |
Battery capacities and driving range figures are yet to be confirmed. However, the current S5 EV is offered with 49kWh and 62kWh LFP battery packs, suggesting similar options could be carried over.
There are also indications that a more advanced semi-solid state battery — already seen in select Chinese-market MG 4 variants — could be introduced at a later stage as production scales up.
Wheels and weight
The new SUV rides on 18-inch wheels, with a kerb weight ranging between 1640kg and 1755kg depending on the variant. This places it in line with other compact electric SUVs in its segment.

Expected debut
MG is expected to fully unveil the 4X at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show in April, where more details, including interior design, battery options, and global rollout plans, are likely to be confirmed.
Market outlook
The 4X represents MG’s continued push to expand its electric SUV portfolio globally. By combining familiar underpinnings with updated styling and the potential for next-generation battery tech, the new model is positioned to strengthen the brand’s presence in the increasingly competitive EV space.
