The Toyota Corolla remains Australia’s best-selling small car heading into 2026, with the latest update introducing a series of specification tweaks across its hybrid hatch and sedan line-up.

Priced from $32,110 before on-road costs for the Ascent Sport hybrid hatch, the Corolla range now tops out at $39,100 for the ZR hybrid hatch, following the discontinuation of the ZR hybrid sedan after slow sales.

While the updates bring more technology and minor design changes, the key headline is a growing divide between the hatch and sedan variants in both features and equipment.

Toyota Corolla features and equipment highlights

The entry-level Ascent Sport grade includes a comprehensive list of standard features, though equipment varies depending on body style.

Key highlights include:

  • 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay (plus wireless Android Auto for hatch)
  • LED lighting throughout
  • Adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist
  • Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Dual-zone climate control (hatch) or single-zone (sedan)

Moving up to the SX adds more premium touches such as wireless phone charging, rear privacy glass, and additional driver-assistance features.

At the top of the range, the ZR hatch introduces luxury and tech upgrades including a head-up display, heated sports seats, an eight-speaker JBL audio system, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Proven hybrid performance

All variants of the Toyota Corolla continue with a familiar hybrid powertrain, pairing a 1.8L four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The system produces a combined 103kW, with fuel consumption rated at a claimed 4.0L/100km for both hatch and sedan models, helping maintain the Corolla’s reputation for efficiency and low running costs.

Under the bonnet, the Toyota Corolla continues with a proven hybrid setup focused on efficiency rather than outright performance.

All variants are powered by a 1.8L naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and Toyota’s hybrid system, driving the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Wider gap between hatch and sedan

Toyota has significantly expanded the differences between body styles for 2026, with the sedan gaining a major technology upgrade in the form of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard across the range.

In contrast, the hatch only offers the larger display in flagship ZR form, with lower grades retaining a smaller 7.0-inch unit.

The sedan also benefits from ‘high-grade’ bi-LED headlights and two USB-C ports as standard, while hatch buyers miss out on these upgrades in entry-level trims.

However, the hatch counters with a broader list of convenience features, including standard wireless Android Auto (joining wireless Apple CarPlay), power-folding mirrors, and front and rear parking sensors, none of which are offered on the sedan.

Blind-spot monitoring is standard on the Ascent Sport hatch, but costs extra on the sedan via a $1000 Convenience Pack. Conversely, the sedan includes satellite navigation as standard, while hatch buyers only gain it from SX grade upwards.

Colour choices vary by body style

Exterior paint options differ depending on whether buyers choose the hatch or sedan, with only a handful of shared finishes such as Glacier White, Frosted White, Silver Pearl and Eclipse Black.

The hatch offers brighter tones like Jasper Red and Sunstone Orange, while the sedan features more subdued options including Celestite Grey and Saturn Blue.

Toyota Corolla market positioning

Despite a 21 per cent sales drop in 2025, the Toyota Corolla still led Australia’s small car segment with 18,968 sales, comfortably ahead of rivals like the Hyundai i30, Mazda 3, and Kia Cerato.

With improved technology, strong hybrid efficiency, and a broader spread of features between variants, Toyota’s latest updates aim to keep the Corolla competitive in an increasingly diverse small car market.
