The 2026 Toyota Hilux is getting closer to its global debut, and official documents lodged with Australian government authorities have revealed new details about the best-selling ute’s next chapter.
Safety upgrades
Paperwork submitted to the Department of Infrastructure confirms the next Hilux will introduce a central airbag for front-row occupants, enhancing protection in side-impact collisions. This move aligns Toyota with rivals such as Ford, Isuzu, Mazda, Kia, and GWM, all of which already offer similar technology.

Engine choices streamlined
The filings list 16 variants of the new Hilux – all powered by Toyota’s familiar 2.8L Turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine (1GD-FTV). Two versions are confirmed:
- A high-output unit, as used in the GR Sport.
- A 48-volt mild-hybrid system with slightly reduced performance.
This suggests the 2.7L petrol and 2.4L Turbo-diesel engines offered in current entry-level variants will be discontinued. While not part of the initial rollout, Toyota is believed to be preparing a 2.0L Turbo-petrol engine for future use, potentially in a performance-focused model to rival the Ford Ranger Raptor.
Styling and platform
Patent drawings leaked earlier this year provide insight into the upcoming Hilux’s design. While its ladder-frame chassis and core body structure will carry over, the ute will adopt fresh styling front and rear. Inside, expect design cues borrowed from Toyota’s larger off-roaders, including the Land Cruiser, Prado, and Tundra.
Launch timing
The all-new Hilux is expected to make its global debut at the Thailand Motor Expo in late November 2025, ahead of its Australian showroom arrival in early 2026.
