Volkswagen has overhauled its Amarok ute line-up for 2026, dropping entry-level variants and four-cylinder diesel engines in favour of a more premium, V6-focused range.
The updated 2026 Volkswagen Amarok line-up sees the removal of the fleet-oriented Core and Life grades, along with the 2.0L single and twin-turbo diesel engines that previously powered them. In their place, the range now centres around higher-spec variants and more powerful drivetrains.
Shift to a high-spec line-up
With the lower trims gone, the Style grade now becomes the entry point to the Amarok range. From there, the line-up steps up through PanAmericana and Aventura, alongside a newly introduced limited-edition Dark Label variant.
At the top of the range sits the flagship Amarok W600, a locally enhanced version developed in Australia with styling and suspension upgrades by Walkinshaw Automotive Group.
Overall, the Amarok range has been reduced from 10 variants in 2025 to just 7 for 2026, reflecting a more streamlined and premium-focused offering.

V6 power becomes the norm
All diesel-powered variants are now equipped with a 3.0L turbocharged V6 engine producing 184kW and 600Nm. This engine is shared with the Amarok’s platform sibling, the Ford Ranger, and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and part-time four-wheel drive with a ‘4A’ automatic mode.
The only alternative engine in the range is a 2.3L four-cylinder turbo petrol unit, delivering 222kW and 452Nm. Previously exclusive to the Aventura, this engine is now offered solely in the Style variant.
As part of the overhaul, Volkswagen has discontinued the 125kW/405Nm single-turbo and 154kW/500Nm bi-turbo 2.0L diesel engines.
Volkswagen Amarok performance & specs
The 2026 Volkswagen Amarok line-up is now centred around higher-output engines, with performance and capability taking a clear step up following the removal of four-cylinder diesel options.
The 2026 Amarok line-up will be offered with following powertrain options:
| Specification | Amarok Diesel | Amarok Petrol |
| Engine | 3.0L Turbo-diesel V6 | 2.3L Turbo-petrol |
| Power | 184 kW | 222 kW |
| Torque | 600 Nm | 452 Nm |
| Transmission | 10-speed automatic | 10-speed automatic |
| Drivetrain | 4WD | 4WD |
| Fuel consumption | 8.4L/100km | 9.7L/100km |
| Towing capacity | 3500kg | 3500kg |

For buyers seeking a petrol alternative, a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine is also available, making it the most powerful option in the range.

New Dark Label special edition
A new Amarok Dark Label variant has also been introduced, limited to just 200 units in Australia.
The special edition features a distinctive blacked-out theme, including black exterior accents for the mirrors, door handles, side steps, skid plate, roof rails, and sports bar. It also adds 20-inch matte black alloy wheels, LED matrix headlights, tinted tail lights, a spray-in tub liner, and a soft tonneau cover.
Unique Dark Label decals are applied across the bonnet, doors, tub, and tailgate to further distinguish the model.
Reduced entry affordability
The move upmarket is expected to push pricing higher across the range. While official pricing for the 2026 Amarok has yet to be announced, the outgoing Style TDI600 4×4 started at $73,740, making it unlikely the new entry point will come close to the $55,490 starting price of the discontinued Core variant.
The Style V6 is now also the only variant available as a factory-built cab-chassis, with all other models offered exclusively with a rear tub. Buyers can opt for 20-inch alloy wheels on the Style in place of the standard 18-inch set.

Following broader market trends
The changes mirror a broader shift in the ute segment, where manufacturers are prioritising higher-specification models and more powerful engines. The Ford Ranger, for example, has also expanded its V6 offering while dropping certain diesel variants, although it continues to offer entry-level four-cylinder options.
Volkswagen Australia has yet to confirm full specifications and pricing for the MY26 Amarok range, with further details expected closer to its on-sale date.
