BMW M is taking its smallest Coupé into new territory, officially introducing the 2027 BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive for Australia. For the first time in the model’s history, the iconic rear-wheel-drive M2 gains BMW’s all-wheel-drive M xDrive system, delivering stronger traction, quicker acceleration and greater stability without abandoning the rear-driven character that has made the M2 a favourite among driving enthusiasts.
Production begins in August 2026 at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, with the first Australian customer deliveries expected in Q4 2026.
2027 BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive pricing and release date
The new all-wheel-drive M2 variant commands a $5,000 premium over the rear-wheel-drive version.
| Model | Pricing (before on-road costs) |
|---|---|
| BMW M2 Coupé (RWD) | $128,100 |
| BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive (New) | $133,100 |
The new BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive is available to order now in Australia, but deliveries are scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of 2026.
M xDrive Comes to the M2
While all-wheel drive often raises concerns among purists, BMW says the M xDrive AWD system has been engineered to preserve the traditional M-car driving experience.
Under normal driving conditions, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels. The front axle only joins the action when extra traction is needed, helping maximise grip and performance without diluting the M2’s playful nature.
The AWD system works alongside:
- Active M Differential
- M-specific traction control
- Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
Together, these systems continuously adjust torque distribution based on road conditions and driver inputs to improve agility, precision and driver confidence. Moreover, drivers can also customise the system’s behaviour through the M Setup menu.
2027 BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive performance figures
Power continues to come from BMW M’s acclaimed S58 engine. The petrol engine is paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission featuring Drivelogic. The combination of extra traction and substantial power allows the new M2 xDrive to launch harder and accelerate more aggressively than its RWD sibling.
| Specification | 2027 BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive |
|---|---|
| Engine | 3.0L twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol |
| Drive type | AWD |
| Maximum power | 353kW |
| Maximum torque | 600Nm |
| Transmission | 8-speed M Steptronic AT with Drivelogic |
| Acceleration (0-100km/h) | 3.7 seconds |
BMW M Ignite technology makes its debut
The M2 xDrive is also the first BMW M model to feature BMW M Ignite Technology, a patented pre-chamber combustion system developed to improve efficiency and help meet upcoming European EU7 emissions regulations.
The system introduces a dedicated pre-chamber equipped with its own spark plug and ignition coil to effectively create two ignition processes within the engine.
BMW says this technology provides:
- Faster combustion
- Improved thermal efficiency
- Reduced risk of engine knock
- Better fuel economy
- More consistent performance during extended high-performance driving
The system is particularly beneficial during sustained track use, where maintaining performance while controlling temperatures and fuel consumption becomes critical.
Additional engine enhancements
Supporting the new ignition technology are several mechanical upgrades, including a higher compression ratio and variable turbine geometry turbochargers. BMW says these changes improve throttle response, broaden the torque curve and reduce turbo lag throughout the rev range.
