BMW has officially revealed the fifth-generation X5, ahead of a new chapter for one of the brand’s most successful and influential models.
Since creating the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment in 1999, the X5 has combined luxury, versatility and BMW’s signature driving dynamics. Now, the all-new model introduces Neue Klasse design, next-generation digital technology and sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology to the X family.
The new BMW X5 is scheduled to arrive in Australia during the fourth quarter of 2026 as a 2027 model, with local pricing and detailed specifications to be announced in Q3 2026.

Australian pricing and detailed specifications of the fifth-generation BMW X5 will be confirmed during Q3 2026.
Production of the new X5 will begin in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, the company’s global centre of excellence for X models. The plant will also become the first to build the all-electric BMW iX5.

A new era begins for the X5
BMW says the fifth-gen X5 represents a major milestone in the brand’s future-focused transformation. It builds on the success of previous generations and introduces:

Four powertrain options for Australia
Buyers will be able to choose from four drivetrain technologies when the X5 arrives locally with BMW’s “technology-open” approach. The Australian range will include:
- Petrol model with 48V mild-hybrid technology
- Diesel model with 48V mild-hybrid technology
- One plug-in hybrid variant
- The all-electric BMW iX5 (making its debut in the X5 lineup)
BMW also confirmed the BMW iX5 Hydrogen will complete the family as the brand’s first hydrogen-powered series-production vehicle. The brand claims it offers a driving range of up to 750km.
2027 BMW X5 exterior: Neue Klasse design
The new X5 adopts the latest evolution of BMW’s X design language with a cleaner and more imposing appearance. Its exterior highlights include:
- Upright front-end styling
- Large vertical BMW kidney grille
- Adaptive LED headlights with distinctive double-X light signatures
- Sculpted body surfaces
- Muscular wheel arches
- Flush BMW winglet door handles
Buyers will also be able to choose from wheel sizes ranging from 21 to 23 inches and 11 exterior paint colours, including four BMW Individual finishes.

First-ever fully electric BMW iX5
The biggest addition to the lineup is the all-electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive. It is built on an 800-volt electrical architecture and claims up to 845km of WLTP driving range. BMW says the upcoming i3 sedan, due around the same time as the iX5, will offers up to 900km of WLPT driving range.

Plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid options of the 2027 BMW X5
BMW is also continuing to offer electrified combustion powertrains. BMW X5 50e xDrive is a plug-in hybrid that offers up to 102km of electric-only driving range.
BMW will continue offering highly efficient 3.0L six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines paired with 48V mild-hybrid technology.

2027 BMW X5 performance: Improved driving dynamics
BMW says the fifth-generation X5 builds on its reputation for delivering strong on-road dynamics and ride comfort. Its key engineering highlights include:
