Heavily overhauled 2027 BYD Atto 2 EV launched in China

Key highlights:

The 2027 BYD Yuan UP Feichi Edition, sold as the Atto 2 in several overseas markets including Australia, has launched in China with more range, a simplified powertrain line-up, updated exterior styling, and several cabin changes.

The new Feichi Edition lineup focuses on efficiency and value, unlike the outgoing range, and goes from 74,800 yuan (A$15,700) to 104,800 yuan (A$22,000)

Eligible buyers can also claim a trade-in subsidy of up to 5000 yuan (A$1050), and the total launch benefits amount to 11,199 yuan (A$2350).

One motor now powers every version

The 2027 Feichi Edition in China uses a single front-mounted permanent-magnet electric motor across all five trims.

Earlier Atto 2 versions offered 70kW and 130kW motor options, but the Feichi Edition drops the more powerful motor and gives all five trims the 70kW unit, including the new 501km versions.

The SUV continues to use BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, with Cell-to-Body battery integration, front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam.

The new 51.13kWh battery gives the Yuan UP up to 501km of CLTC range, equivalent to around 370km WLTC, and the existing shorter-range options remain available.

Same footprint, more cabin changes

The Yuan UP keeps the outgoing model’s exterior dimensions:

BYD adds Energetic Yellow and Oxygen Blue paint colours, while upper trims gain 17-inch low-drag alloy wheels.

Inside, BYD has made a notable ergonomic change. A steering-column stalk replaces the previous centre-console gear toggle, freeing up storage space beneath the 50W air-cooled wireless phone charger. The 60:40 split-fold rear bench can increase cargo capacity to 1320 litres.

Other cabin equipment includes:

• Redesigned two-spoke steering wheel
• Front-seat ventilation and heating
• Panoramic glass roof with electric sunshade
• Rear air vents
• Smartphone NFC key access

DiLink 100 handles infotainment

The updated Atto 2 uses BYD’s DiLink 100 cockpit and features a 12.8-inch rotatable centre display, an 8.8-inch driver display and four-zone voice recognition.

Driver-assistance equipment varies between trims. Equipped versions receive BYD’s DiPilot C system, which provides Highway Navigation on Autopilot and automated parking. BYD also provides coverage for damage caused during automated parking manoeuvres.

Strong sales in China

The Atto 2 or Yuan UP recorded 22,958 domestic sales in August 2026, according to China EV DataTracker, which represented 13.2% month-on-month and 16.9% year-on-year growth.

July deliveries reached 20,275 units, up 13% month-on-month and 62.8% year-on-year. June sales stood at 17,945 units. August’s Atto 2 represented 12.5% of BYD’s domestic sales.

The updated model now faces competition from the Geely EX2 (Galaxy Xingyuan) and other small electric crossovers in China. The Geely Xingyuan recently became China’s best-selling car year to date, with 266,166 units sold through August.

What does this mean for Australia’s Atto 2?

The Yuan UP is sold in Australia as the BYD Atto 2, and because the current front-wheel-drive Atto 2 only arrived in Australia in late 2025, local showrooms will continue selling the initial stock first.

The Atto 2 currently holds the title of Australia’s cheapest electric SUV, which sits below the larger BYD Atto 3 in the local range and starts at $31,990 before ONCs.

The new Feichi Edition lineup is unlikely to make its way to Australia because the motor is too weak for it, and the long-range variant is already sold here with up to 345km WLTP range.

Atto 2 fans have another option. Australia’s latest addition to the Atto 2 family is the BYD Atto 2 DM-i plug-in hybrid, which is going to roll out in the local showrooms soon, and it has a massive claimed total range of 1000km.
