Mahindra has unveiled the production version of its 2023 Global Pik-up concept in Mumbai, India, on August 14, which will launch in Australia as the Mahindra Lifestyler.

The ute shares its foundations with the Scorpio mid-size SUV, which is developed around a next-generation body-on-frame architecture. The company developed the Lifestyler at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai, combining its latest technology with off-road capability, payload capacity and everyday comfort.

The all-new Mahindra Lifestyler pickup targets the global mid-size ute market, where it will face established names such as the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, but considering its more accessible price, it can also compete with the JAC T9, GWM Cannon and LDV T60 in Australia.

Mahindra plans to start sales and deliveries in India by April 2027, and the Indian pricing will start below ₹19.79 lakh (or A$29000) before on-road costs. Mahindra has not locked in an Australian launch date, but the Lifestyler is expected to arrive locally around mid-2027, shortly after the Indian rollout.

1. Scorpio diesel engine powers the Lifestyler ute

The Mahindra Lifestyler will use the company’s second-generation 2.2-litre all-aluminium Gen-II mHawk 4-cylinder turbo-diesel for global markets like Australia, and it is expected to produce 450Nm of torque.

Mahindra will offer two transmission choices: a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic, and the ute also gets rear disc brakes rather than the traditional rear drum brakes used by many vehicles in the mid-size ute segment.

The same engine and transmission are used in the Scorpio SUV, and the upcoming ute also shares a design language with this SUV.

Some global regions will also get a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine option in the new Mahindra Lifestyler ute, same as in the Scorpio N SUV in India, but the brand has not confirmed it for the Australian market yet.

2. New ladder frame stretches the wheelbase

Mahindra has built the Lifestyler on an all-new next-generation body-on-frame architecture to meet strict international safety standards for Global NCAP and Euro NCAP crash testing.

The Indian carmaker has also stretched the wheelbase compared with the Scorpio SUV, and it now measures around 3.11 metres, which creates more space for its dedicated dual-cab load bed.

The ute also offers 3,500kg towing capacity and approximately 650kg payload capacity and a dedicated dual-cab cargo bed. It uses a tough live rear axle with leaf springs to handle these serious payload capacities.

3. 4Xplore brings four-wheel-drive capability

The Lifestyler uses Mahindra’s 4Xplore four-wheel-drive system, and it combines shift-on-the-fly 4WD with low-range gearing and four terrain modes:

  • Normal
  • Grass-Gravel-Snow
  • Mud-Rut
  • Sand

That gives the Lifestyler a mechanical off-road system designed to support both everyday driving and more demanding terrain.

4. Big touchscreen, but plenty of physical controls

Mahindra has given the Lifestyler a large portrait-oriented central touchscreen similar to the one seen in a Ford Ranger, unlike the landscape screens used in its current SUVs in Australia. The cabin also features:

  • Fully digital driver’s instrument cluster
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Potential 540-degree camera system with an under-bonnet view
  • Factory sunroof

Mahindra has not abandoned physical controls; it combines its large touchscreen with physical AC controls and rotary dials for drive and terrain modes.

5. Level 2 driver assistance

The Lifestyler ute took a massive leap from standard, bare-bones safety equipment in the previous-generation Mahindra Pik-Up workhorse to advanced Level 2 autonomous driving technology, which includes:

  • Level 2 ADAS
  • Trailer Sway Mitigation
  • Drowsy-driver detection
  • Semi-automatic parking

The full features, equipment, and specifications of the Mahindra Lifestyler ute are yet to be revealed by the brand and will be communicated gradually until near its Indian launch in April 2027.
