Volkswagen Australia has officially confirmed the arrival of the second-generation Volkswagen T-Roc compact SUV. It is a completely redesigned version of one of the most successful global SUVs and is expected to launch in Australia by the end of 2026.

The next-generation T-Roc represents far more than a facelift. Volkswagen has significantly redesigned the SUV from the ground up, introducing major changes to its platform, design, interior quality, technology and drivetrain lineup.

While the upcoming Volkswagen T-Roc shares core interior features with the Tiguan, it is a more compact, sporty urban crossover, while the Tiguan is a larger, more traditional, family-focused SUV. The brand is also expected to position the new T-Roc, with highly specified launch grades likely to be priced between $50,000 and $60,000 before on-road costs.

2027 Volkswagen T-Roc exterior and dimensions

The upcoming Volkswagen T-Roc takes on a noticeably bolder design direction compared with the first-generation model. Volkswagen has redesigned both the front and rear ends, giving the SUV a cleaner and more modern appearance.

Updated slim LED lighting signatures and illuminated Volkswagen badging also bring the T-Roc into line with the brand’s latest global design language.

Dimensionally, the SUV has grown by 122mm in length, improving cabin space and road presence while retaining the compact proportions that made the first-generation model so popular.

Second-generation Volkswagen T-Roc goes mild-hybrid

Unlike the first-generation Volkswagen T-Roc, which relied entirely on conventional petrol engines, the new model introduces mild-hybrid technology. The Australian launch lineup is expected to begin with:

  • A 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system
  • Producing 110kW and 250Nm
  • Combined with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission
  • ‘MQB Evo’ architecture (as seen in the latest Volkswagen Golf and Tiguan)

The mild-hybrid setup can assist the petrol engine to improve efficiency, though it cannot drive the vehicle on electric power alone.

A more powerful variant is likely to follow later, featuring a 150kW 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, mild-hybrid assistance and 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Manual transmissions have been dropped globally for the new-generation T-Roc. Instead, the SUV adopts a column-mounted gear selector, freeing up additional cabin storage space.

2027 Volkswagen T-Roc interior

Volkswagen has made one of the biggest changes of the entire overhaul inside. The second-generation T-Roc adopts a much more premium cabin layout featuring:

  • Fabric-clad dashboard surfaces
  • Soft-touch materials throughout
  • Illuminated leatherette trim details

As a result, the T-Roc inherits the newest cabin technology, safety systems and software developments from both VW Golf and Tiguan.

New tech borrowed from larger VWs

Technology has also received a major upgrade. The upcoming Volkswagen T-Roc now features:

  • A larger Digital Cockpit display
  • Volkswagen’s latest MIB4 infotainment system
  • Redesigned ergonomic controls
  • Wireless smartphone charging with cooling functionality
  • Expanded ambient lighting options
  • Small display experience dial to adjust drive modes, audio volume, and ambient lighting profiles in the centre console

The T-Roc also gains the brand’s latest driving experience control system and newest software platform.

More practical for families

Volkswagen says rear-seat legroom has increased, while luggage capacity now grows to 475 litres, making the SUV more family-friendly without sacrificing its city-friendly dimensions.

T-Roc R Performance flagship confirmed for Australia

Performance fans haven’t been forgotten either. Volkswagen has confirmed that a next-generation T-Roc R is already in development, although production is not expected to begin until at least 2027 globally.

That timing means Australia may not see the new performance SUV until late 2027 or even sometime in 2028. The upcoming T-Roc R is also expected to adopt mild-hybrid assistance to help meet tightening global emissions regulations. Volkswagen is also evaluating a Toyota-style full-hybrid powertrain for the T-Roc, though it is not expected at launch.

Outputs are anticipated to sit close to the current Volkswagen Golf R, which produces around 245kW and 420Nm on the MQB Evo platform.

Bottom line

The second-generation 2027 Volkswagen T-Roc is shaping up as a major leap forward rather than a simple facelift. Bigger, more premium and packed with updated technology, the new SUV pushes further into upscale territory while adding mild-hybrid efficiency for the first time.

Volkswagen is clearly positioning the next-gen T-Roc as one of the brand’s most important models for Australia heading into 2027. Moreover, a future T-Roc R is already confirmed.
