Volvo is giving its XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids a major electric-range boost, with both SUVs switching to a bigger 41kWh battery. The XC60 also gets its second facelift in two years, while the XC90 receives the new PHEV hardware without any exterior changes.
Volvo Car Australia expects both models to arrive between April and June 2027. Both models will be available with mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid, like the existing lineup, and final pricing and specifications will be available closer to vehicle introduction.
XC60 gets another facelift
The XC60 sits in Volvo’s mid-size, five-seat premium SUV range and targets agile urban driving, and its latest update gives it a redesigned front end, including:
- New bonnet
- New fenders
- New bumper
- Flatter grille
- New two-part interpretation of Volvo’s Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights
The XC60 also gets a new tailgate with straighter cut lines, while its tail-lights adopt a flatter design with lighting elements extending further into the tailgate.
The rear bumper also gets a redesign, while Volvo adds several new alloy wheel designs.
The big change: a 41kWh PHEV battery
Volvo replaces the existing 19kWh PHEV battery with a much larger 41kWh unit, which pushes the XC60’s electric driving range dramatically higher.

The T6 AWD Long-range PHEV can travel up to 200km on the WLTP cycle, while the more powerful T8 AWD Long-range PHEV achieves up to 189km. For comparison, the existing XC60 T8 has an 89km WLTP range rating.

XC90 gets the same T8 upgrade
The XC90 remains Volvo’s flagship large, seven-seat premium SUV, aimed at larger families and buyers who need higher towing capability; unlike the XC60, it focuses entirely on the under-the-skin powertrain revamp rather than introducing another separate exterior facelift.
The XC90 T8 gets the same 41kWh battery and plug-in hybrid drivetrain as the XC60 T8, but its larger and heavier body reduces its electric driving range to 164km WLTP.
More safety technology
Volvo also upgrades the XC60’s safety package with its latest collection of radars, cameras and sensors, and the available features include:
- Automatic emergency steering assist
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Cyclist detection when opening doors
- 360-degree camera with 3D view
- Lane change assist
Interior changes stay subtle
The cabin receives new trim and material choices, but Volvo hasn’t made major changes beyond those updates. An 11.2-inch infotainment touchscreen now sits prominently in the centre of the dashboard and runs Volvo’s Android-based Volvo Car UX operating system, which includes the Gemini AI assistant.
