A new approval under Australia’s Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) system has confirmed that a six-seat Tesla Model Y has been cleared for local sale. This suggests the larger, three-row version of the Model Y could arrive in Australia within the next few months.

Bigger body and three rows

The new extended Model Y will feature three rows of seats and captain’s chairs in the second row. The Model Y L is 4,969mm long, which is 177mm longer than the standard Model Y. The wheelbase is also stretched by 150mm to 3,040mm.

The new EV is also Tesla’s heaviest EV version so far. It clocks 2088kg in tare weight, which is around 60kg heavier than existing variants.

What does this mean for Australia?

Approval under Australian regulations means Tesla can now sell the six-seat Model Y locally. An official launch date has not been announced, but the approval increases expectations of a launch in the near future.
