The latest Audi A5, the carmaker’s new large luxury sedan, has proven its safety credentials with a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, following a comprehensive round of crash and safety assist testing conducted in 2024.

This rating applies to all variants sold in New Zealand from March 2025 and in Australia from May 2025, and remains valid until December 2030.

ANCAP test scores at a glance

  • Adult Occupant Protection- 87%
  • Child Occupant Protection- 87%
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection- 78%
  • Safety Assist- 79%

While it is not a surprise that the premium brand performed quite well in the comprehensive safety assessment, it did not set any impressive scores either. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the ANCAP Safety rating.

Adult occupant protection

The Audi A5 scored 87% (34.82 out of 40 points) in this category, offering good protection in a range of destructive crash tests. ANCAP noted a slight increase in injury risk to the driver’s chest in the frontal offset and oblique pole impact tests. Similarly, rear passenger chest protection received a mild downgrade in the full-width frontal test. That said, the A5’s extensive airbag suite—including dual front, side chest, side head-protecting airbags, and a centre airbag—contributed to strong scores in side and far-side impacts. Whiplash protection was rated well for front-seat occupants but less so for those in the rear.

Child Occupant Protection

Matching the adult protection score, the Audi A5 received 87% (42.97 out of 49) for child safety. The vehicle performed well in dynamic frontal and side crash tests using child dummies. Child restraint installation was mostly straightforward, with minimal compatibility issues. The A5 also includes a Child Presence Detection (CPD) system, which alerts the driver if a child is left in the back seat. However, it uses an indirect monitoring method, which lacks the real-time accuracy of direct systems like the one fitted to the Polestar 3.

Vulnerable Road User Protection

The new Audi A5 achieved a 78% score (49.62 out of 63) here, showing good results for pedestrian and cyclist safety. The bonnet and bumper provided solid protection for the head, pelvis, and lower limbs. The car’s Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system performed particularly well in forward pedestrian and cyclist detection. However, it lacks AEB backover functionality, which led to a zero score in that subtest. The A5 also includes systems to help prevent collisions with motorcycles, along with limited motorcycle lane detection support.

Safety Assist

Scoring 79% (14.37 out of 18), the Audi A5 features a comprehensive suite of active safety tech. This includes AEB for car-to-car collisions, junction assist, an advanced speed assistance system (SAS), and lane support systems like lane keep assist, emergency lane keeping, and lane departure warning. The AEB system demonstrated strong, consistent performance, particularly in rear-end crash avoidance. A driver monitoring system is fitted as standard, but its limited functionality slightly impacted the final score.

ANCAP noted generally good protection across a range of destructive crash tests, although there was a slight increase in injury risk to the driver’s chest in both frontal and oblique pole impact tests. The rear passenger’s chest protection also received a mild downgrade in the full-width frontal test.

Tech-forward safety: Standard features on all variants

  • Dual front, side chest, and side head-protecting airbags
  • Centre airbag for improved side impact protection
  • Autonomous emergency braking (AEB): Car-to-Car, Pedestrian, Cyclist, Motorcycle
  • Lane support systems: LKA, LDW, ELK
  • Advanced speed assistance system (SAS)
  • Child Presence Detection system (indirect type)

Final word

With its polished design, premium features, and well-balanced safety credentials, the Audi A5 stands out as a smart and secure choice in the large luxury sedan segment.
