Market insights: September vs August 2025

Australia’s new-car market maintained solid momentum through September, even as the country’s best-selling brand, Toyota, recorded a slight dip from 20,791 to 18,318 units. Despite the drop, Toyota’s lead remains unchallenged.
Ford was in second place with 8,300 sales, edging past August’s 8,002, driven by the ever-popular Ranger ute. Kia and Mazda remained close rivals, the latter enjoying increased month-on-month sales from 6,814 to 7,034. Hyundai also inched up from 6,322 to 6,501 units sold, reflecting steady buyer confidence.
The standout performers came from China and the EV segment. BYD and GWM experienced steady growth in month-on-month sales, underscoring a growing shift toward budget-friendly electrified options. Tesla made one of the month’s biggest leaps, rising from 2,927 in August to 4,663 in September, likely boosted by strong demand for the Model Y and Model 3.
Meanwhile, Mitsubishi and MG posted modest but meaningful gains, maintaining a stable presence in the top 10 list.
