Australia’s new-car market kept its momentum rolling in August 2025, with sales once again topping 100,000 units for the month. Leading the way was the Ford Ranger, which returned to first place after losing ground to Toyota in July.

According to the latest data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), 103,694 vehicles were delivered across Australia in August 2025, representing a 2.9% increase from August 2024. Despite this steady growth, the year-to-date total (832,068 units) remains 0.5% lower than the same point in 2024.
Much of the year-on-year (YoY) increase came from recovering electric-vehicle sales. Tesla’s Model Y saw a 74.7% YoY increase, while BYD delivered 3,064 vehicles, more than tripling its August 2024 tally.

Segment shake-up: SUVs, utes and EVs dominate

Utes and SUVs once again dominated the August charts, accounting for nine of the top 10 sellers. Three dual-cab utes – Ranger, HiLux and D-Max – highlight ongoing Australian demand for workhorse versatility, while compact SUVs like the MG ZS and Hyundai Kona continue to pull in urban buyers.
Electric vehicles had a strong sales month in August, with Tesla and BYD leading the charge. The Model Y is the best-selling EV in Australia right now, but BYD’s lineup of electric and hybrid models has already put it ahead of Mitsubishi in August’s best-selling brands.
Final thoughts
August reinforced several familiar themes in the market: utes remain the backbone of Australian sales, Toyota maintains its overall brand dominance, and Chinese carmakers continue to gain share. With September sales on the horizon and lots of new model launches incoming before the year ends, competition for the top ranks is set to intensify further.
