Australia’s SUV market continues to surge, and May 2025 brought some interesting shifts across different segments. While Toyota maintained its stronghold in several categories, EVs like the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV5 gained serious ground. Chinese brands like Chery and MG also saw strong performances in the budget small SUV segment.

Here’s a closer look at the top three best-selling SUVs in each category for May 2025, based on the latest VFACTS and EVC data:

Mazda CX-3 maintained its leadership in the Light SUV category with 1,254 units sold, well ahead of the Toyota Yaris Cross. The Suzuki Jimny followed with 719 sales, still remaining popular amongst Aussie adventurers.

Small SUVs under $45K

The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro really surged in monthly sales, rocketing to second spot in this price category with 1,725 sales. It was a couple of hundred units behind the Hyundai Kona which recorded 1,951 sales in May 2025. The MG ZS rounded out the top three with 1,693 units, continuing to attract buyers with its strong value proposition. Expect these numbers to improve with the start of deliveries of the updated MG S5.

Small SUVs over $45K

The BMW X1 led the premium small SUV segment with 511 units sold, combining premium feel with everyday usability. The Volkswagen T-Roc followed with 433 sales, offering a stylish European touch. The Audi Q3 rounded out the top three with 351 units displacing Kia EV6 from last month’s sales.

Medium SUVs under $60K

Toyota’s grip on the segment remained firm with the RAV4 topping the charts at 4,003 units, largely thanks to its hybrid appeal, strong resale value, and bulletproof reliability. The Mazda CX-5 rose to second place in the segment charts with 2,264 sales, continuing to draw praise for its upmarket interior and enjoyable driving dynamics. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Tucson held steady in third with 1,794 units, offering bold styling and solid value that resonates with younger families.

Medium SUVs over $60K

The electric wave gained momentum in this segment, with the Tesla Model Y surging ahead at 3,580 sales, proving Australians are warming rapidly to premium EVs. Newcomer Kia EV5 made an impressive debut with 703 units sold, delivering futuristic design and a tech-rich cabin at a compelling price point. The BMW X3, with 618 sales, remains a go-to for those wanting a classic luxury SUV experience with sporty undertones.

Large SUVs under $80K

In a space dominated by tough, family-ready wagons, the Toyota Prado led again with 2,732 sales, showcasing its enduring appeal for those who need long-haul durability and off-road capability. The Ford Everest came in close behind with 2,369 units, offering a great balance between ruggedness and everyday comfort. The Isuzu MU-X followed with 1,643 sales, standing strong as a value-driven, diesel-powered alternative that’s loved by towing enthusiasts.

Large SUVs over $80K

The BMW X5 remained the top luxury choice in this segment with 475 sales, offering a polished mix of power, comfort, and advanced features. The Land Rover Defender, with 365 units, continued to carve out a loyal fanbase among those who want serious off-road chops with a premium badge. Meanwhile, the Range Rover Sport clocked 225 sales, delivering a performance-luxury blend for buyers who want more flair and presence on the road.

Upper large SUVs under $120k

The Toyota LandCruiser stayed ahead with 2,040 units sold, proving once again that it’s the go-to for those who need unmatched toughness and touring capability. The Nissan Patrol followed with 661 sales, still a favourite for its V8 grunt and spacious cabin. The Land Rover Discovery, while selling a modest 41 units, maintains niche appeal among buyers wanting a luxury SUV that doesn’t shy away from adventure.

Upper Large SUVs over $120k

In the top tier of luxury SUVs, the BMW X7 led the segment with 108 units, combining road presence with seven-seat luxury. The all-new Lexus GX impressed with consistent month-on-month sales, carving out a strong start in Australia with its blend of ruggedness and premium appeal. Rounding out the trio, the Mercedes-Benz GLS recorded 78 sales, offering stately comfort and brand prestige in equal measure.
