BMW Australia Ltd has issued a national safety recall affecting 16,578 vehicles across several 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 Series models, along with selected X and Z models built between 2020 and 2023.

The recall, listed under number REC-006539, relates to a potential defect in the starter motor assembly.

Models affected

BMW 2 Series

The recall covers selected examples of:

  • BMW 2 Series
  • BMW 3 Series
  • BMW 4 Series
  • BMW 5 Series
  • BMW 7 Series
  • BMW X3
  • BMW X4
  • BMW X5
  • BMW Z4

Vehicles within the 2020–2023 production years are included. A full list of affected VINs has been published by BMW.

What is the issue?

BMW Z4

According to the recall notice, a manufacturing defect may cause increased wear in the starter motor solenoid switch. This can lead to an internal short circuit.

If the fault occurs, the vehicle may fail to start. In more serious cases, overheating of the starter motor could lead to a vehicle fire during operation.

Safety risks

BMW 5 Series

Authorities warn that:

  • The driver may be unable to restart the engine.
  • Overheating could result in smoke or, in extreme cases, a vehicle fire.

Either scenario increases the risk of injury to occupants and potential property damage.

What should owners do?

BMW X4

BMW will contact affected owners directly and request they book an appointment with an authorised BMW dealer. Dealers will replace the starter motor free of charge.

In the meantime, BMW recommends:

  • Not leaving the vehicle unattended while the engine is running.
  • Avoiding use of the Remote Engine Start function.
  • Remaining alert to any signs of smoke or unusual smells from the vehicle.
