BMW M is marking a major milestone in 2026, celebrating 40 years of the legendary BMW M3. The M3 has represented BMW M’s philosophy of bringing motorsport-inspired technology to the road for four decades, earning its place as one of the defining sports sedans of its generation.

The anniversary also coincides with BMW Australia preparing to deliver its 10,000th BMW M3 to a local customer.

BMW Australia has launched a special experiential contest to commemorate both milestones, giving enthusiasts the chance to win an unforgettable driving experience at the BMW M Snow & Ice Experience in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

The M3 anniversary year also saw the launch of BMW M Concept Neue Klasse, which is the direct preview of the all-electric M3, at the 2026 Le Mans, France.

A prize designed for M enthusiasts

The grand prize captures the essence of the BMW M brand: a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the BMW M3 in one of the most challenging and spectacular driving environments in the world.

The winner will attend the BMW M Snow & Ice Experience, held at the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground (SHPG), which is a high-altitude testing facility between Queenstown and Wanaka on New Zealand’s South Island. It starts on August 4, 2026.

The prize package includes:

  • Return airfares
  • Two nights of accommodation
  • Helicopter transfers to the proving ground (weather permitting)
  • Participation in the BMW M Snow & Ice Experience

Driving the BMW M3 in its natural habitat

Like all BMW M Driving Experience programs, the event is designed to help drivers of all skill levels improve their abilities while maintaining a strong focus on safety.

Participants will take part in a range of activities using BMW’s latest high-performance M models, including:

  • Motorkhana challenges
  • Drag sprints
  • Barrel races
  • Drifting exercises

The experience concludes with a high-speed passenger ride in a BMW M3 alongside a globally certified BMW M instructor.

BMW notes that the BMW M Driving Experience traces its roots back to 1976, making it the first driver training program established by an automotive manufacturer. Since then, it has become renowned worldwide for combining driver education with memorable performance driving experiences.

How to enter the competition?

Rather than simply entering a random draw, participants must predict the exact specifications of Australia’s 10,000th BMW M3.

Using BMW’s configurator, entrants are required to guess:

  • The exact BMW M3 model variant
  • The exterior colour
  • Any BMW Individual paint option selected
  • The Australian state where the vehicle will be delivered
  • The delivery date

The entrant whose prediction most closely matches the actual vehicle will win the prize. BMW describes the process with a simple slogan: Configure. Predict. Submit. Win.

Competition dates

The competition is live from 17th to 30th June 2026.

BMW says the campaign reflects its broader focus on experiential marketing, creating opportunities for customers and enthusiasts to engage with the brand beyond simply owning one of its vehicles.

The Bavarian carmaker hopes to turn a significant milestone into a memorable experience for fans of the M brand by tying the competition to the delivery of Australia’s 10,000th BMW M3.

Bottom line

BMW M is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic M3 and the upcoming delivery of Australia’s 10,000th M3 with a unique competition.

Rather than a traditional giveaway, entrants must predict the exact specification and delivery details of the milestone car for a chance to win an exclusive BMW M Snow & Ice Experience in New Zealand.
