BMW of North America has issued an urgent recall for nearly 200,00 vehicles (196,355), including Toyota models, due to potential fire risk caused by a starter motor fault. The recall covers several BMW models and the Toyota Supra, which uses a BMW-sourced engine.

Affected models

The recall impacts the following vehicles:

  • BMW 230i (2022)
  • BMW 330i (2019-2021)
  • BMW 430i coupe and convertible (2021-2022)
  • BMW 530i (2020-2022)
  • BMW Z4 (2019-2022)
  • BMW X3 and X4 SUVs (2020-2022)
  • Toyota Supra (2020-2022)

All affected vehicles feature the BMW B48 2.0L Turbo-petrol engine. In North America, the engine starter relay may corrode, potentially overheating and causing a short circuit, which increases the risk of fire. Authorities advise owners to park affected vehicles away from structures until the remedy is completed.

Implications for Australia

While BMW Australia has not yet issued a formal recall notice, a spokesperson confirmed that the Australian market will be impacted. “We are in close contact with our head office to determine the specific implications for our market,” they said. Many Australian BMW and Toyota models use variants of the B48 engine, meaning owners could be affected locally.

This follows a previous BMW Australia recall in April 2025 for 273 vehicles, including 520i and X3 models, also linked to a starter generator fault in B48 engines.

What this means for owners

Australian owners of the affected BMW and Toyota models are advised to monitor official channels for recall instructions and avoid parking their vehicles in enclosed areas until the issue is resolved.
