Chinese automaker BYD has officially detailed its upcoming ATTO 1, a compact electric vehicle it claims will be Australia’s most affordable EV upon launch next month. The move is a direct attempt to lower the entry point for electric vehicle ownership in a market still grappling with high EV prices.

The BYD Atto 1, known as the Dolphin Surf in Europe and the Seagull in its home market, is no stranger. BYD reports that the model has already surpassed one million sales globally, and it comes with notable accolades, including the ‘2025 World Urban Car of the Year’ award and a spot on TIME Magazine’s ‘Best Inventions of 2025’ list.

The vehicle’s specifications firmly place it in the city car category. BYD will offer two variants, named Essential and Premium, with a clear focus on cost-effective urban mobility rather than long-distance touring.

Both versions are front-wheel drive and support DC fast charging, with BYD claiming a 10-80% charge can be achieved in approximately 30 minutes. This charging capability is a practical necessity for a vehicle with a relatively small battery, making it suitable for quick top-ups during a busy day.

BYD Atto 1 tech and safety

A key part of BYD’s strategy is to load its entry-level model with technology and safety features that are often optional or missing in this price segment. The company states that both variants will come with a comprehensive suite of equipment as standard.

Key standard features:

  • A 10.1-inch central touchscreen with wireless smartphone integration.
  • Synthetic leather upholstery.
  • Six airbags.
  • A 360-degree camera system.
  • BYD’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).

The inclusion of a 360-degree camera and ADAS on an entry-level model is a notable differentiator, potentially giving it an edge over both electric and internal combustion rivals in the budget category.

Atto 1 pricing and availability

BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins stated the vehicles present “real value for money,” though the crucial pricing information remains under wraps. The official launch and order opening are set for November 13. The brand’s success in capturing the “most affordable” title will hinge entirely on the final price point revealed next month.
