The BYD portfolio is set to expand further in 2025 as the brand confirms the BYD Atto 2 compact electric SUV for Australia. It is the newest and smallest member of its Atto electric vehicle line-up, set to arrive in the final quarter of 2025. The compact SUV is positioned to make EV ownership more accessible while maintaining a strong focus on design, technology, and everyday usability.

While the full list of specifications for the Aussie-spec Atto 2 will be revealed closer to launch, BYD has confirmed a host of details for its upcoming entry-level EV:

Battery51.13 kWh Blade Battery (LFP chemistry)
Motor TypeSingle Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
Power130kW
Torque290Nm
Drive TypeFront-wheel drive (FWD)

The BYD Atto 2 is said to be offered in two specification trims at launch – Essential and Premium, but both will be offered with the same battery and motor combination.

Platform and powertrain: Built for efficiency and reliability

The Atto 2 is underpinned by BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, a next-generation EV platform designed to optimise safety, handling, and energy efficiency. It incorporates Cell-to-Body (CTB) battery integration, which contributes to increased torsional rigidity — a key factor in both occupant safety and driving dynamics.

It also features BYD’s integrated 8-in-1 electric powertrain. This compact power unit combines several systems — including the motor, inverter, charger, and battery control — to reduce weight, noise and vibration, while boosting reliability.

The Atto 2’s ride and handling is supported by a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear setup.

Exterior design

Designed under the direction of former Audi design chief Wolfgang Egger, the  BYD Atto 2 takes traditional styling elements of the small SUV class and smoothens them for a premium look. Its short overhangs, floating roofline, and flush door handles give it an aerodynamic profile, while the front bumper seems aero-styled as well. At the back, you get a connected LED taillight that adds character to an otherwise flat and upright rear end. The sporty rear spoiler does add a dynamic touch to the rear.

Interior and features

Inside, the Atto 2 continues BYD’s tradition of packing in premium features at accessible price points. Key cabin highlights include:

  • 8.8-inch LCD digital instrument display
  • Synthetic leather seats
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Rotating touchscreen infotainment system (10.1-inch for Essential, 12.8-inch for Premium)

The interior design favours minimalism with modern textures, while providing user-focused functionality for everyday driving.

Safety tech

In terms of safety equipment, the BYD Atto 2 is equipped with a strong suite of features across both variants. These include:

  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • Six airbags
  • Reversing camera (Essential) or 360° camera system (Premium)
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power output
  • NFC digital key access

Launch timelines

The BYD Atto 2 is expected to reach Australian showrooms in Q4 2025, with full pricing and detailed specifications to be released closer to launch. BYD’s local management is confident the model will resonate strongly with Australian buyers seeking a stylish, feature-rich, and compact electric SUV.

“With its exciting looks, superlative technology, and eminent versatility, the Atto 2 promises to be a game-changer in the small-size SUV segment,” said Wing You, General Manager of BYD Australia.

The Atto 2 will join the existing Atto 3 in  BYD the line-up, further expanding the carmaker’s footprint as it continues to gain traction among EV buyers in Australia.
