BYD Atto 3 refresh with more power approved for Australia

The facelifted BYD Atto 3 electric SUV has been approved for sale in Australia, bringing a light design refresh and significantly more powerful drivetrain options. While full Australian specifications haven’t been confirmed, approval documents suggest the upgraded, more powerful Atto 3 is on the way.

A facelifted BYD Atto 3, now designated as the Atto 3 Evo, launched in the UK recently. The new version offers significantly faster charging and substantial performance improvements for BYD’s popular electric SUV.

In the UK and Europe, the updated model is sold as the BYD Atto 3 Evo, and brings major mechanical improvements with a new E-Platform 3.0, which has an 800V electrical architecture. The battery is integrated into the chassis for improved rigidity.

Australian certification documents for the facelifted BYD Atto 3 list two new powertrains: a 230kW single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and a 330kW dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD). For comparison, the current Atto 3 uses 150kW/310Nm FWD and 49.9kWh or 60.5kWh battery options.

The facelifted European BYD Atto 3 Evo now features a 110L front boot (frunk), vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability (up to 3.3kW) and improved interior tech. The interior upgrades include:

  • Digital instrument display 8.8-inch (from 5-inch)
  • Gear selector moves to the steering column stalk
  • 15.6-inch touchscreen no longer rotates
  • Google apps built-in (Maps, Assistant, Play Store)

Other interior features in the overseas variant include: 

  • Wireless phone charger (with cooling)
  • 360-degree camera
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Head-up display

Safety features in the Atto 3 Evo

The safety suite of the new Atto 3 Evo features:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Front and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure assist
  • Collision warnings (front and rear)
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Automatic speed-limit control

Final words

After Australian Government approval for sale in hand, BYD Atto 3 may launch within the next six months. Pricing for the new BYD Atto 3 in Australia has not been released, but due to the substantial upgrades, it is expected to cost more than the current model. The on-sale Atto 3 has a starting price of $39,990 (without on-road costs).
