BYD has taken the wraps off the new BYD Dolphin G DM-i ahead of its European market launch, although there is currently no confirmation regarding an Australian release. The compact hatchback is set to become the brand’s first Europe-focused model, with overseas publication CarNewsChina claiming a combined driving range of up to 1,000km.

The BYD Dolphin G DM-i is scheduled to launch in Europe in June 2026, while first customer deliveries are expected later this year. The hatchback uses BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid technology and is expected to target buyers looking for improved fuel efficiency without fully switching to an EV.

The Dolphin G DM-i features a noticeably different design compared to the fully electric Dolphin hatchback sold globally.

At the front, the hatchback gets slimmer LED headlights, a redesigned bumper with larger air intakes, and a cleaner fascia design. Other styling highlights include semi-hidden door handles, blacked-out pillars, dark alloy wheels, and a floating roof effect.

According to overseas publication CarNewsChina, the Dolphin G DM-i measures 4,160mm in length and 1,825mm in width, making it slightly shorter but wider than the existing Dolphin EV.

Inside, the cabin gets a dark-themed interior layout with a floating infotainment touchscreen and “G” branding embossed into the front seats.

BYD Dolphin G DM-i powertrain details

BYD has not yet confirmed complete technical specifications for the Dolphin G DM-i.

However, according to the CarNewsChina report, the new hatchback could share its plug-in hybrid setup with the BYD Atto 2 DM-i available in select export markets. That setup combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor and LFP battery packs.

The report also claims the Dolphin G DM-i will offer a combined driving range of up to 1,000km, although official WLTP fuel economy and EV-only range figures are yet to be revealed.

The Dolphin G DM-i signals BYD’s growing focus on plug-in hybrid vehicles alongside its expanding EV lineup.

The hatchback is also expected to become one of the first BYD models produced at the company’s upcoming factory in Szeged, Hungary, which is set to support BYD’s broader European expansion plans.

Will the BYD Dolphin G DM-i launch in Australia?

There is currently no confirmation regarding an Australian launch for the BYD Dolphin G DM-i.

However, with demand for hybrids and plug-in hybrids continuing to rise in Australia, the new hatchback could eventually become a candidate for local markets if BYD decides to expand its international PHEV lineup further.
