BYD has unveiled its largest SUV to date, with patent images from China offering a first look at the BYD Great Tang, a new all-electric flagship model set to crown the brand’s line-up.

Sitting at the top of BYD’s Dynasty Series, the Great Tang is positioned as a more luxurious and conservative alternative to the Ocean Series models currently sold in markets such as Australia. It is designed to showcase scale, comfort and next-generation electric technology rather than outright sportiness.

A genuinely full-size electric SUV

BYD Great Tang

According to filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the BYD Great Tang is a substantial vehicle by any measure.

Dimensions at a glance:

  • Length: 5263mm to 5302mm
  • Wheelbase: 3130mm

That puts it well beyond mainstream large SUVs and closer in size to premium full-size models such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS, underlining BYD’s ambitions in the upper end of the electric SUV market.

To improve manoeuvrability, Chinese media reports suggest the Great Tang will be BYD’s first model to feature four-wheel steering.

Clean, imposing design

The Great Tang’s styling focuses on strong proportions and minimal surface clutter, following the emerging design language of high-end Chinese SUVs.

Key exterior elements include:

  • A full-width LED light bar at the front
  • A sleeker evolution of BYD’s ‘visor’ design
  • Vertically stacked headlights integrated into the bumper
  • Prominent wheel arches and a strong shoulder line
  • A full-width rear light bar and roof-mounted spoiler

The overall look is upright and confident, prioritising presence over aggression.

New EV platform with ultra-fast charging potential

Under the body, the BYD Great Tang is built on the brand’s Super e-Platform electric architecture. While detailed specifications are yet to be confirmed, the platform supports a 1000-volt electrical system.

BYD claims this technology could enable:

  • Charging speeds of up to 1000kW
  • A 400km range top-up in as little as five minutes, in ideal conditions

If realised in production form, it would place the Great Tang among the fastest-charging electric SUVs in the world.

Powertrain options confirmed

The Great Tang is set to launch with three drivetrain configurations, offering both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options.

Expected outputs include:

  • Rear-wheel drive:
    • 300kW single motor
    • 370kW single motor
  • All-wheel drive:
    • 215kW front motor paired with a 370kW rear motor

Performance figures have not yet been released, but the focus appears to be on effortless, high-speed cruising rather than sharp handling.

BYD’s expanding SUV portfolio

The Great Tang will become one of two upper-large SUVs in BYD’s global range. It will sit alongside the upcoming BYD Sealion 08, an Ocean Series model expected to feature softer styling and a more family-oriented character.

While Australian launch plans have not been announced, the BYD Great Tang clearly signals the brand’s intent to compete in the premium full-size electric SUV segment.
