BYD has recalled 32,009 examples of the Shark 6 in Australia because a fault with the spare wheel support system could cause the wheel to detach while the ute is being driven. The recall affects all three Shark 6 variants sold in Australia.
What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?
The recall involves the spare wheel support cable and mounting assembly underneath the BYD Shark 6. BYD says incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque can cause abnormal wear to the support cable. Continued movement and friction while the vehicle is being driven could eventually cause the cable to fail, resulting in the spare wheel becoming detached.
A detached spare wheel could create a hazard for other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death. The issue affects the Shark 6’s spare wheel mounting system rather than the ute’s powertrain or braking system.

BYD says the recall covers 28,543 Shark 6 Premium, 2,100 Shark 6 Performance and 1,366 Shark 6 Dynamic Cab Chassis vehicles.
The affected production periods are:
- BYD Shark 6 Premium: August 29, 2024 to June 12, 2026
- BYD Shark 6 Performance: January 27, 2026 to June 15, 2026
- BYD Shark 6 Dynamic Cab Chassis: September 26, 2025 to April 15, 2026
Owners can check whether their vehicle is affected by entering its 17-character VIN on BYD Australia’s vehicle recall website. BYD is also contacting affected owners by email and through the BYD app.
What should car owners do now?
BYD is advising affected Shark 6 owners to remove the spare wheel until the recall repair has been completed. The company will replace the spare wheel lifter assembly with an updated design, with the repair carried out free of charge. BYD says the work itself should take around 30 minutes, although the vehicle may need to remain with the dealer for longer depending on workshop scheduling.
Instructions for removing the spare wheel are included in the BYD Shark 6 owner’s handbook. Owners should contact their preferred BYD dealer to arrange the recall repair.
