Australia’s love affair with utes and SUVs is widely known. The country’s new-car market has no shortage of SUVs or utes. So Deepal, the EV-focused brand from Chinese giant Changan, has decided to create something that tries to tick both boxes. Meet the Deepal E07 Multitruck, a radical new all-electric model that aims to blur the lines between passenger comfort and work-ready versatility.

Deepal E07 Multitruck

It arrives priced from $64,900 before on-road costs, the E07 is pitched as neither SUV nor Ute. Instead, Deepal is marketing it as the world’s first true “multi-purpose” EV. It is designed to carry the polish of a coupe-inspired SUV while also offering the practicality of a tray-backed workhorse.

Australian customer deliveries have already commenced, with Inchcape, the distributor also responsible for Subaru, Peugeot, and Foton, handling local operations. This gives the newcomer an established support network from day one.

Service & warranty

The Deepal E07 comes with 7-year capped price servicing, a 7-year/160,000km warranty, and an 8-year/240,000km Battery Warranty for complete peace of mind.

An exterior that refuses to be boxed in

DEEPAL E07 multitruck RWD

On first impressions, the Deepal E07 looks like a fastback SUV, with a sloping coupe roofline, flush door handles, and muscular arches giving it a premium presence on the road. But look closer, and the elongated rear half tells a different story. With its unique convertible rear architecture, the E07 can transform to reveal a more utilitarian side, expanding its cargo space to better swallow tools, sporting gear, or bulky weekend equipment.

This chameleon-like approach is rarely seen in the industry, and one Deepal believes will resonate strongly with Australians, who are just as likely to demand weekday practicality as they are weekend adventure readiness. Inside, the cabin pushes firmly upmarket.

Colours:

  • AWD Exclusive: Spessartite Orange
  • Other Premium: Matte Hematite Grey, Jade Green
  • Standard: Quartz White, Obsidian Black, Hematite Grey (RWD)

Interior design and comfort

Occupants are greeted by zero-gravity seats with massage, heating, and cooling, a high-resolution infotainment screen, and 256-colour ambient lighting that lets drivers set the mood at the touch of a button. Noise insulation has been given special attention, too, creating what Deepal describes as a “moving sanctuary.”

Practicality & space:

  • 131L front trunk (frunk) + 524L rear boot (expandable to 1,654L)

  • Cabin transformable into flat sleeping space (queen-size mattress compatible)

Cargo area modularity

The Deepal E07’s rear architecture is the headline act: it turns the car from a family-friendly SUV into a genuine load-hauling Ute with the press of a button. That’s not marketing spin, it’s engineering aimed at people who genuinely want one vehicle that can do daily school runs and heavy weekend tasks without compromise.

How does it work?

  • Single-button transform: press the tailgate control, and the rear glass dome slides forward ~400 mm, the tailgate drops, and the rear seats can fold flat, the system can be paused at any point for partial configurations.
  • Multiple control points: you can operate the transformation from the central infotainment screen, voice commands, exterior controls (four switches on the left side of the boot) or from inside the load bay itself.
  • Accessible UTE space: Electrically retractable rear seats feature easy-access buttons inside the load area, allowing you to reconfigure the cabin without needing to crawl into the boot.
  • Practical outlets and surfaces: a 3.5 kW / 220 V three-pin outlet in the load bay, plus durable, easy-to-clean plastic surfaces and concealed storage, make the area robust for tools, muddy gear, or wet surfboards.
  • Payload & load geometry: the transformable setup is designed for usable cargo, the RWD spec sheet notes a 300 kg payload for the transformable rear, and with seats folded, the load area extends up to ~1,865 mm long by 1,100 mm wide (15° recline), enough for many trades or outdoor setups.

What is its real-world usage?

  • Tradespeople can lock tools inside a protected, weather-sealed bay and still have a comfortable cabin up front.
  • Weekend adventurers can carry bikes, kayaks and rooftop kit without a trailer, then convert back to a lounge for the drive home.
  • Car campers can use the flatbed + V2L power for fridges, lights and a campsite kitchen.

Performance and range

Deepal isn’t shy about giving the E07 some serious punch. Charging and battery tech

DEEPAL E07 multitruck

Deepal has designed the E07 with long-distance usability in mind, pairing its sizeable battery packs with cutting-edge charging hardware. Both RWD and AWD models support ultra-fast DC charging, capable of taking the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in around 15 minutes when plugged into a high-power 240 kW charger. For everyday convenience, a 7 kW AC home unit can fully recharge the E07 in 13–16 hours, making it easy to wake up to a full battery each morning.

Beyond charging speed, the E07 introduces flexible energy-sharing features. The system supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), allowing owners to power appliances, camping gear, or even tools directly from the car’s battery. More forward-looking still, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality means the E07 can feed power back into the grid or a home energy system, helping offset electricity costs or provide backup power during outages. Together, these features make the E07 more than just a vehicle – it’s a mobile energy solution. Here’s how the two models stack up on paper:

For passive protection, the E07 uses a reinforced unibody structure with high-strength steel and engineered crumple zones. Occupants are protected by eight airbags, including dual front, side, curtain, and rear passenger airbags.

Other measures include an electronic door system with a manual override for emergencies, 223 mm ground clearance, and the ability to wade through 600 mm of water.

Who are its rivals?

Tesla cybertruck

The Deepal E07 Multitruck enters the Australian market as a unique mix of SUV and ute, with no direct competitors offering the same combination of features. It is often described as China’s version of the Tesla Cybertruck. While it may draw design inspiration from the Cybertruck, the Deepal E07 distinguishes itself with its modular rear architecture, which allows for versatile cargo configurations. This feature caters to both urban commuters and outdoor enthusiasts, making it a compelling alternative in the electric vehicle market. Additionally, the Deepal E07’s advanced technology, including ultra-fast charging capabilities and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, positions it as a forward-thinking option for Australian consumers seeking innovation and versatility.

Other potential rivals include the GAC Pickup 01, as well as larger electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T. However, the E07 stands out in the current EV landscape by combining utility, comfort, and versatility in a single package.
