Ferrari has revealed the 849 Testarossa, its most powerful production model to date, and the new flagship of the range. Powered by a twin-turbo V8 paired with three electric motors, the plug-in hybrid berlinetta produces 772kW and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 2.3 seconds. The model not only replaces the Ferrari SF90 Stradale but also reintroduces the legendary Testarossa name. It combines heritage styling cues with Ferrari’s latest innovations in aerodynamics, hybrid technology, and driver-assist systems.

A hybrid powerhouse

The 849 Testarossa is powered by an updated twin-turbo V8 engine producing 610kW, paired with three electric motors for a total output of 772kW. The engine features a larger turbocharger, titanium components, and enhanced thermal management, achieving a specific output of 153kW/l. The hybrid system consists of one rear motor and two front-axle units, providing all-wheel drive, torque vectoring, and multiple drive modes. The electric motors add 162 kW to the powertrain.

Blending racing tech and heritage

The Testarossa name dates back to 1956, when Ferrari first used it for race cars with red-painted cylinder heads, and later for the legendary 1984 road car. The new 849 Testarossa embraces that legacy while incorporating Ferrari’s latest innovations: ABS Evo, the FIVE digital vehicle estimator, and active aerodynamics that generate 415 kg of downforce at 250 km/h, a 25 kg increase over the SF90.

Weight has been kept in check despite the performance jump, delivering Ferrari’s best-ever power-to-weight ratio in a range model. Performance figures are equally impressive:

Performance MetricValue
0–100 km/h< 2.3 seconds
0–200 km/h6.35 seconds
Top speed> 330 km/h

Design evolution

Styled under Flavio Manzoni, the 849 Testarossa combines sharp, geometric surfaces with cues from Ferrari’s 1970s Sports Prototypes. The striking “twin-tail” rear design, integrated active spoiler, and sculpted side intakes all contribute to the car’s aerodynamic efficiency while reinforcing its futuristic character. Inside, a reworked cockpit features a floating dashboard, F80-inspired gear gate, new steering wheel with mechanical controls, and an updated HMI system for simplified interaction.

Assetto Fiorano option

For drivers seeking maximum track capability, Ferrari will offer the Assetto Fiorano package. This specification reduces weight by around 30 kg using carbon fibre for the doors and underbody, and titanium for the exhaust system. It also includes multimatic shock absorbers derived from GT racing, stiffer suspension settings, and a fixed geometry that optimises cornering stability. Aerodynamic upgrades such as twin rear wings and additional underbody elements further enhance downforce, giving this version nearly three times the rear downforce of the standard 849 Testarossa. The package is completed with track-oriented Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2R tyres, improving grip and consistency in circuit use.

The future of Ferrari hybrids

The 849 Testarossa is the first Ferrari range car to use recycled aluminium alloys for its engine castings, reducing CO₂ emissions in production by up to 80%. It comes with a 7-year maintenance program and extended hybrid warranty options, underlining Ferrari’s long-term commitment to electrified performance.

With its mix of heritage, next-generation hybrid power, and advanced dynamics, the 849 Testarossa represents Ferrari’s vision for the future, where extreme performance meets efficiency and timeless design.
