GWM is doubling down on performance and global appeal, confirming that its flagship off-roader, the GWM Tank 700, will be offered with a new V8 engine in Australia. It also announced a “GF” supercar with a more powerful V8 engine for the global launch.

The announcement came directly from GWM Chairman Jack Wei during the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, signalling a clear shift toward high-capacity engines for key export markets like Australia and New Zealand. Final local release date and pricing will be revealed later.

A V8 built for global players

According to GWM Chairman Jack Wei, the Tank 700 will adopt a newly developed 4L V8 powertrain, distinct from the high-performance unit planned for GWM’s upcoming supercar.

  • Tank 700 will use a normal, more conventional V8 engine tuned for flagship SUVs
  • Upcoming (due 2027) GF “Great Faith” supercar will use the more powerful 4L twin-turbo hybrid V8

These cars will be designed specifically for global markets, not China.

Demand from Australia and New Zealand

The idea of a V8-powered Tank SUV has been building for some time. This was first seriously discussed at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, and the idea generated strong interest from ANZ media.

All of this highlights the growing demand for premium V8 SUVs outside China. This latest confirmation shows GWM is listening and responding directly to those markets.

Part of a bigger V8 strategy

The Tank 700 V8 isn’t a one-off but part of a broader push. GWM also confirmed the upcoming GF supercar will feature a 4-litre twin-turbo hybrid V8 at the Beijing show.

This signals multiple V8 engines in development and their application across different vehicle types. The Tank 700 becomes a key pillar in expanding GWM’s high-output powertrain lineup.

Flagship status, elevated further

The GWM Tank 700 is already positioned as the flagship SUV in the Tank range and combines bold, rugged design, advanced tech, and strong off-road capability.

It already benefits from the Hi4-Z platform in China, expanding electrified options, but a V8 would take its global positioning to another level.

What this means for the buyers

For markets like Australia, where large engines and towing capability still matter, this is a significant development. A V8-powered Tank 700 could offer more power and torque for towing and touring, a stronger appeal against established large SUVs and a unique mix of luxury and off-road capability.

Final words

The confirmation of a V8-powered Tank 700 marks a bold move from GWM. In a world shifting toward electrification, the brand is backing big-capacity engines where they still matter most, and Australia is firmly in that conversation.
