Ford Australia has confirmed that the next-generation Ford F-150 Lightning EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) will be sold in Australia. This new-gen Lightning ute also runs on electric motors but has a much longer driving range compared to the current fully electric model due to a different powertrain. The new EREV model is expected to launch in 2027 locally.

The new F-150 Lightning EREV is not a fully electric model like the current Ford F-150 Lightning EV. The Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) powertrain uses electric motors entirely to drive the wheels, supported by a smaller battery and a petrol engine.

The petrol engine acts only as a generator and produces electricity to recharge the battery or send that power directly to the motors while driving. It does not drive the wheels.

According to Ford, the new F-150 Lightning EREV will have a total driving range of more than 1125km. This range figure combines electric driving range plus power generated by the petrol engine and is based on maximum US EPA testing.

For comparison, the current Lightning EV has a range of 386–515km. However, the EREV model will keep key features from the EV model, including vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.

Expected launch and Australian distribution

The new EREV is expected to arrive in 2027 in Australia. It will not be converted by Ford Australia but will be imported and converted to right-hand drive by AusEV, as usual. AusEV, based in Brisbane, already handles the Lightning EV locally and will also distribute the Ford F-150 EREV model in Australia.

Ford’s decision to axe the fully electric F-150 came after huge losses and a lower demand for electric pickups in the US. The confirmation of Ford F-150 Lightning EREV follows a similar move by Ram, which also changed from a fully electric Ram 1500 to a range-extender version.
