Ford Motor Company of Australia has issued a safety recall (campaign number 25C55, recall reference REC-006542) affecting a limited number of Mustang vehicles sold locally.

The recall relates to a software issue in the vehicle’s Body Control Module (BCM), which could stop the brake fluid warning light from illuminating as intended if brake fluid levels become low. If undetected, insufficient brake fluid could lead to reduced braking performance, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?

According to the recall notice, a software fault may prevent the brake fluid warning lamp from activating when brake fluid levels drop below a safe threshold.

This means drivers may not receive a critical alert about low brake fluid, which could result in:

  • Reduced braking performance
  • Increased stopping distances
  • Higher risk of accidents, potentially causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users

Ford has also noted that vehicles previously repaired under an earlier recall (campaign number 23C35) must still be inspected and updated, as the earlier software update may have been incorrect.

Which vehicles are affected?

  • Make: Ford
  • Model: Mustang
  • Model Years: 2021–2023
  • Total Affected Units in Australia: 207

A list of affected VINs has been published. Ford Mustang owners are encouraged to check if their vehicle is included in the recall.

What should owners do now?

Ford Australia will contact registered owners in writing, requesting they book an appointment at an authorised Ford dealership.

At the dealership, technicians will update the Body Control Module (BCM) software to ensure the brake fluid warning system functions correctly. The repair will be carried out free of charge.

Even if your Mustang has already undergone repairs as part of a previous recall, Ford advises that the vehicle must still be inspected and updated again to ensure the correct software version is installed.
