Ford Motor Company of Australia has issued a safety recall for its E-Transit electric van (model years 2021–2025), citing a manufacturing defect in the 12-volt battery vent system. The issue could result in the release of hazardous gases into the cabin, posing a potential health risk to occupants.
What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?
According to the official recall notice (reference REC-006466, campaign 25S99), the 12-volt battery’s vent in affected vehicles may not operate as intended. Under certain driving conditions—particularly in high temperatures—the defect could cause toxic gases to leak into the passenger compartment.
Occupants may notice a hissing sound, an acidic or rotten-egg odor, a visible gas leak, or excessive heat in the seat area. Exposure to these gases may affect the health of vehicle occupants and increase the risk of serious injury.
