Geely’s small electric EX2 has emerged as one of the biggest automotive success stories in China, finishing 2025 as the country’s best-selling vehicle across all segments, not just among EVs.
Sales data from the brand shows the Geely EX2 recorded 465,775 registrations during the year, placing it ahead of every petrol, hybrid and electric rival in the world’s largest car market.
The result is particularly significant given the fierce competition in China’s small-car and EV categories, where aggressive pricing, rapid product cycles and constant new entrants make sustained sales leadership difficult.
Compact EV demand drives EX2 success
On sale for just over a year, the Geely EX2 has completed a rapid transition from market newcomer to segment leader in just 14 months. Over the past seven months, monthly sales have consistently exceeded 40,000 units, with September surpassing the 50,000-vehicle mark.
That level of demand has helped cement the Geely EX2’s position at the top of the charts, while underlining the growing enthusiasm of Chinese buyers for compact, city-focused electric vehicles.
Shared platform supports rapid scale
The EX2 is built on Geely’s Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA), a platform already underpinning models sold in Australia, including the Geely EX5 electric SUV and the Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid.
The shared architecture is designed to support multiple body styles and powertrains, helping Geely scale production efficiently while keeping costs competitive in one of the world’s most price-sensitive EV markets.
Compact dimensions, flexible interior
In overseas markets, the Geely EX2 is offered as a rear-wheel-drive, five-door hatch. Below are the EX2 dimension details:
| Dimensions | Details |
| Length | 4135mm |
| Height | 1580mm |
| Width | 1805mm |
| Wheelbase | 2650mm |
Despite its compact footprint, the relatively long wheelbase allows for a flexible cabin layout, measuring just 100mm shorter than the Geely EX5 SUV, and enabling the fitment of upwards of 30 functional storage compartments throughout the cabin.
Geely’s broader growth accelerates
The EX2’s rise comes as Geely continues a major surge in the Chinese market. In 2025, the group’s wholesale sales climbed 66.4 percent to just under 2.1 million units, overtaking both Volkswagen and Toyota to become China’s second-largest carmaker.
Geely now claims the country’s single best-selling model with the Xingyuan hatchback, while its Galaxy New Energy Vehicle sub-brand more than doubled volumes year-on-year to more than 526,000 units.
China’s EV boom continues
Industry data shows total new-vehicle wholesales in China rose 9.4 percent in 2025 to a record 34.5 million units, marking the third consecutive year above 30 million.
New Energy Vehicles continued to drive that growth, climbing 28.2 percent to 16.5 million units, accounting for roughly half of all passenger car sales.
With the Geely EX2 now leading the market and an Australian launch locked in for 2026, the brand appears well-positioned to expand its influence both at home and abroad as demand for smaller, more affordable EVs continues to grow.
Australian arrival confirmed for 2026
Geely Auto Australia has confirmed the EX2 will join its local line-up in the second half of 2026. When it arrives, the hatchback will slot below the EX5, giving Geely an entry-level electric option aimed at urban buyers seeking a smaller, more affordable EV.
Australian specifications, including battery options, equipment levels, and pricing, are yet to be confirmed, with further details expected closer to launch.
