Key highlights

  • The Geely EX2 Complete is priced at $26,490 before on-road costs, leaving a gap to the Atto 1’s current entry-level offer.
  • Geely has not confirmed a price reduction, but says it will monitor the market and assess what is sustainable.
  • The EX2 offers a claimed 252km driving range, compared with 220km for the entry-level BYD Atto 1.

Geely Australia could lower the price of its EX2 electric hatchback to compete more closely with the BYD Atto 1, following a price reduction that has made its rival one of the country’s cheapest electric cars.

As of 14 October 2026, the Geely EX2 Complete starts at $26,490 before on-road costs. The BYD Atto 1 Essential, meanwhile, is available for $19,990 drive-away under a special offer introduced in September 2026.

That puts a significant gap between the two entry-level models, with BYD’s advertised drive-away price $6,500.01 below the Geely’s list price before on-road costs are added. The different pricing structures mean the final cost difference will depend on Geely’s on-road charges.

Geely Australia has not announced a price cut or confirmed when one might happen. However, the brand has indicated it is keeping a close eye on the market.

“We’re focused on value; we’ll monitor the market and see what kind of sustainability can be achieved at that entry-level electric vehicle,” Geely Australia head of product planning and marketing Andrew Tuitahi said when asked about the possibility of a price adjustment.

For Australian buyers considering an affordable electric car, a reduction could make the EX2 more competitive. At present, though, any move towards matching BYD’s $19,990 drive-away offer remains speculation.

Geely EX2 vs BYD Atto 1 range and performance

Price is only one part of the comparison. The Geely EX2 Complete has a claimed driving range of 252km, giving it a 32km advantage over the BYD Atto 1 Essential’s 220km rating.

The difference comes partly from the Geely’s larger battery, which has 5.2kWh more capacity than the entry-level BYD’s battery. However, actual driving range will vary with conditions, driving style, climate control use and other factors.

The two electric hatchbacks also take different approaches to power delivery. The Geely EX2 uses a rear-mounted electric motor to drive the rear wheels, while the BYD Atto 1 Essential sends its power to the front wheels.

The BYD produces 65kW and 175Nm, compared with 60kW and 150Nm for the base EX2. That gives the Atto 1 an advantage on paper in both power and torque, although the figures alone do not establish which car feels quicker in everyday driving.

Both models are also available in more expensive variants with larger batteries, additional equipment and higher outputs.

Higher-spec models widen the price gap

The pricing difference extends beyond the entry-level versions. As of 14 October 2026, the Geely EX2 Inspire flagship is priced at $30,990, while the BYD Atto 1 Premium costs $26,490.

That leaves buyers weighing up not just the purchase price but also their daily driving needs, equipment preferences and the range available from each battery option.

For drivers who primarily travel around town, either model could suit short commutes and routine errands. Buyers who regularly cover longer distances will need to consider charging access and whether the vehicles’ claimed ranges provide enough flexibility for their travel.

A lower entry price could help Geely attract buyers who might otherwise choose the BYD, particularly those focused on keeping upfront costs down. However, the company has yet to reveal whether it would reduce the EX2’s list price, introduce a drive-away offer or take another approach.

BYD Atto 1 and Geely EX2 sales in Australia

Sales figures suggest both electric hatchbacks have found an audience since arriving in Australian showrooms, although their time on sale differs.

By the end of September 2026, BYD had sold 4,471 Atto 1s in Australia, while Geely had recorded 2,964 EX2 sales. The Geely has been on the market for less time, which complicates a direct comparison of the cumulative totals.

Based on the reported figures, the BYD averaged around 497 sales a month, while the Geely averaged 988 monthly sales since its local showroom arrival.

Those figures indicate the EX2 has established a strong early sales pace, but they do not guarantee that it will maintain that momentum as competition intensifies.

A price adjustment could give Geely another way to attract cost-conscious EV buyers. Until the company confirms its plans, however, the BYD Atto 1 retains the advantage of its advertised $19,990 drive-away offer, while the EX2 counters with a longer claimed range and rear-wheel-drive layout.
