Geely Auto Australia is expanding its local line-up with the confirmation of the Starray EM-i, a plug-in hybrid SUV that will join the fully electric Geely EX5 in showrooms by late 2025. This model will be Geely’s first in Australia to feature its E-Motive Intelligence (EM-i) Super Hybrid powertrain.

Built on the same Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) as the EX5, the Starray EM-i signals the brand’s continued push into electrified mobility while aiming directly at competitors such as the BYD Sealion 6.

Powertrain and Performance

The EM-i hybrid system pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (73kW/125Nm) with a single electric motor producing 160kW and 262Nm. Together, the system delivers 193kW to the front wheels.

An 18.4kWh lithium iron phosphate battery supports the hybrid drivetrain, while a 50-litre fuel tank provides long-range flexibility. The battery also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functions, with up to 3.3kW of output—ideal for powering devices or appliances while camping or working remotely.

The Starray EM-i features three selectable drive modes:

  • Pure: Electric-only operation
  • Hybrid: Balanced petrol-electric operation
  • Power: Maximum combined performance

Geely says the vehicle is designed to behave like an EV most of the time, with silicon carbide battery technology helping manage temperature and maintain consistent performance.

Competition and Market Positioning

With its plug-in hybrid setup and pricing expected to compete with the BYD Sealion 6 (from $42,990 before on-roads), the Starray EM-i will be a key player in the fast-growing mid-size PHEV segment.

Two powertrains are currently offered with the Sealion 6:

  • 160kW / 300Nm (FWD)
  • 238kW / 550Nm (AWD)

Although the Starray EM-i is front-wheel drive only, its efficiency, V2L feature, and electric-first design may appeal to a broader audience seeking a cost-effective step into electrification.

Local Commitment and Launch Plans

Speaking on the upcoming launch, Geely Auto Australia CEO Lei Li said:

“Geely is dedicated to meeting the needs of the Australian market… We understand there is a need for vehicles to provide more included features and more cost efficiency in this time of increasing financial pressure.”

Final pricing and specifications will be confirmed closer to launch, with the Starray EM-i set to arrive in Q4 2025.
