Why GWM is discounting now
The deals follow a standout year for the Chinese brand in Australia. GWM delivered 52,809 vehicles in 2025, a 23.4 per cent increase year-on-year in a market that grew by just 0.3 per cent.
That result saw GWM finish as the seventh best-selling brand overall, cementing its position as Australia’s most popular Chinese carmaker. However, the margin was slim, with just 394 sales separating GWM from BYD in eighth place, and competition is expected to intensify in 2026 as rivals expand their model ranges.
GWM also grew its retail footprint last year, expanding its dealership network by 10 per cent to 123 locations nationwide.
Model-by-model sales performance
Nearly every GWM model posted sales growth in 2025. The Haval Jolion remained the brand’s best-seller, climbing 36.3 per cent to 19,413 deliveries, though it still trailed the Hyundai Kona.
Other strong performers included the Tank 300, up 26.9 per cent to 5035 units, the Haval H6, which rose 6.5 per cent to 13,217 units, and the Cannon Alpha, which surged 130.5 per cent to 2524 deliveries.
The exceptions were the Tank 500, which fell 9.2 per cent to 1519 units, and the Ora electric hatch, which dropped 37.7 per cent to 763 units, highlighting the brand’s ongoing reliance on combustion and hybrid models.
Electrified sales mix in Australia
While EV uptake remains modest for GWM, electrified vehicles are playing a growing role. In 2025, plug-in hybrids accounted for 7.9 per cent of GWM’s sales, ahead of EVs at 1.4 per cent but behind hybrids (21.2 per cent) and petrol and diesel models (69.5 per cent combined).
New models and local tuning ahead
Looking ahead, GWM plans to launch at least seven new models in Australia during 2026, all featuring “new energy” powertrains using the brand’s Hi4 and Hi4-T plug-in hybrid technology.
The rollout is expected to include GWM’s first people mover and its first model from the premium Wey brand, known in some markets as the Wey 80. Alongside, ongoing localisation work led by former Holden chassis engineer Rob Trubiani, who is developing Australian-specific ride and handling tunes.
