GWM’s premium brand Wey is preparing to launch its biggest SUV ever, the Wey V9X, in China. The V9X is larger, faster and more advanced than anything the brand has offered before.

The new PHEV model enters China’s fast-growing segment of ultra-large SUVs, most of which are over 5.2 metres long and often feature a “9” in their name. While the Chinese arrival is confirmed, this SUV’s Australian launch remains unknown.

A seriously large upcoming SUV

Dimensions revealed in the Chinese government filings position the V9X as one of the largest SUVs GWM has ever built. For comparison, the GWM Tank 500 (similar in size to a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series) is shorter and rides on a smaller wheelbase.

Platform and PHEV performance

The V9X will debut GWM’s new One architecture, a flexible platform designed to support petrol, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), diesel hybrid, fully electric, and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. It will underpin a wide range of future GWM vehicles, including SUVs, sedans, utes and sports cars.

The flagship Wey V9X is expected to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring a 175kW turbocharged 2L four-cylinder petrol engine. It may accelerate 0–100 km/h in 4.4 to 4.7 seconds with electric motor assistance.

It will be based on an 800V electrical system with up to 363km electric-only range (Chinese test cycle) through a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery supplied by SVOLT.

Design, seating, and technology

GWM Wey V9X’s styling follows other large Chinese “9-class” SUVs, featuring a long, boxy body shape, rounded edges, and full-width LED light bars front and rear.

The V9X is expected to have 3 rows and 6 seats with second-row captain’s chairs and a third-row bench seat. The interior has not yet been officially revealed.

And other possible features include air suspension, LiDAR sensor for advanced driver assistance, and camera and radar-based safety systems.

Strong competition in China

BYD Great Tang flagship SUV

The Wey V9X enters a crowded large SUV segment in China that includes:

  • BYD Great Tang (electric)
  • Xpeng GX (EV and extended-range EV)
  • Aito M9 (EV and EREV)
  • Denza N8L and N9
  • Lynk & Co 900
  • Zeekr 9X PHEV
  • IM LS9 EREV
  • Nio ES8 EV

Will this SUV come to Australia?

Wey is set to launch in Australia this year as a premium GWM sub-brand, alongside Haval and Tank. However, it is unclear whether the V9X will be offered in Australia.

Currently, the largest Wey model is the Lanshan (Blue Mountain), a plug-in hybrid 3-row SUV measuring 5156mm long. Other Wey models include the Gaoshan people mover (expected in Australia) and the Mocha PHEV SUV.
