After more than two decades, the iconic Honda Prelude is making a comeback, this time as a hybrid sports coupe. Honda has confirmed that the all-new 2026 Honda Prelude will arrive in Australian showrooms by mid-2026, following its global debut in September 2025.
The sixth-generation Prelude revives a nameplate that left the Australian market in 2001, but it’s returning with a fresh focus on electrification, performance, and day-to-day usability.
“Prelude taps into a rare combination of nostalgia and performance with broad appeal across generations of Honda customers, old and new,” said Robert Thorp, Director of Automotive at Honda Australia.

Honda Prelude Hybrid Powertrain
The new Prelude will be powered by Honda’s e:HEV dual-motor hybrid system, designed to deliver strong fuel efficiency and smooth acceleration, with a new S+ Shift mode that mimics gear changes for a more engaging drive. Underneath, the car borrows from the Civic Type R’s chassis, including dual-axis front suspension, wider tracks, and Brembo brakes, though tuned for everyday comfort rather than hardcore dynamics.

Exterior design
The exterior design theme, dubbed “Unlimited Glide,” draws inspiration from the silhouette and fluid motion of a glider. The Prelude’s sharp, low nose, flush door handles, sleek body lines, and black chrome grille all work together to create a sense of lightness and speed. The low and wide stance enhances road presence and signals its sporty intent.
Interiors
Inside, the 2026 Prelude features a refined and airy cabin with a blue-and-white colour scheme that reflects the sky. The design is both sporty and elegant, featuring materials such as ivory-finished trim, detailed stitching, and a PRELUDE logo embroidered into the upholstery.
The driver’s seat is bolstered for spirited driving, while the front passenger seat offers more relaxed support. The cockpit is equipped with a D-shaped steering wheel, a full-digital display, and excellent outward visibility thanks to a low dash and clean horizontal lines.
Practicality meets sportiness: A daily-drivable sports coupe
While it’s designed to be a “specialty sports” model, the new Prelude also delivers surprising practicality. Features include:
- Liftback-style tailgate
- Folding rear seats
- Underfloor cargo storage
- Hooks for shopping bags
This smart packaging makes it one of the few hybrid sports coupes with real-world everyday usability.
Final thoughts
The return of the Honda Prelude blends nostalgia with innovation. It promises to deliver the thrill of sporty driving, the efficiency of a hybrid, and the practicality of a modern coupe, all wrapped in a design that feels both futuristic and familiar.
With its mid-2026 launch confirmed for Australia, the Prelude is gearing up to become a standout in the hybrid sports segment. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a new buyer, this is one revival worth waiting for.
