JLR Australia has issued a recall of 270 units of the Jaguar I-Page electric performance SUV due to a fire hazard caused by a software issue that may cause the battery to overheat and catch fire.

The company has urged Jaguar I-Pace owners to book a software update as soon as possible, which will limit the charging capacity. In the meantime, the car owners are advised to keep charging below 90% and park outdoors until a permanent fix is found.

What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?

According to the official recall notice, a software problem affecting the battery system may cause cell modules in the high-voltage battery to overheat when the battery is charged to high levels. If overheating continues, it could potentially lead to a vehicle fire, and the smoke may enter the cabin.

The smoke or fire could pose a risk of serious injury, unconsciousness, or death to the vehicle occupants and other road users, such as bystanders.

What should car owners do now?

Owners of affected vehicles should contact their local Jaguar Land Rover retailer or authorised service centre to arrange an appointment and get the software update done free of charge.

Also, as an interim solution, Jaguar Land Rover will install updated software in affected vehicles that will limit the battery charge level to below 90%, reducing the risk of overheating while engineers work on a permanent solution.

Until the software update is installed, JLR is advising owners to limit charging to a maximum of 90% and park the vehicle outdoors, away from buildings or other vehicles where possible.
