The Australian electric ute market is set to grow in 2026, with government documents confirming the arrival of the Korean ute KGM Musso EV. The model will become one of only a handful of battery-powered pickups available in the local market.

KGM has already confirmed the KGM Musso EV will debut in Australia during the first quarter of 2026. The model has now received the green light from federal authorities, paving the way for its entry into showrooms.

The KGM Musso EV features a unibody platform, which differs from the majority of ladder-frame utes currently on sale in Australia. It will be sold with two driveline configurations:
- Single-motor front-wheel drive
- Dual-motor all-wheel drive
Charging capability includes 11kW AC and 300kW DC fast charging.

How does it compare?

When stacked against rivals, the KGM Musso EV holds its own in terms of payload but lags significantly in towing capabilities. With a maximum braked towing capacity of 1,800 kg, it falls well short of the 3,000–3,500 kg benchmark set by conventional diesel and hybrid utes as well as the upcoming LDV eTerron 9. Payload capacity is more competitive, however, matching or even exceeding electrified alternatives: the Ford Ranger PHEV handles 808–973kg, the BYD Shark 6 carries 790kg, and the GWM Cannon Alpha manages 685kg, while the KGM Musso EV tops out at 905kg.
Market positioning
The KGM Musso EV appears designed as a more urban-friendly, car-like pickup rather than a traditional workhorse. Overseas marketing describes it as a “mid-size pickup for urban drivers,” a message reinforced by its multi-link rear suspension, moderate towing ability, and compact footprint.
Expected pricing
While most electric utes in Australia so far tend to carry a hefty price tag close to $100,000, the KGM Musso EV should be targeting a starting price around $80,000 for a competitive position. In comparison, electrified utes like the BYD Shark 6 and Ford Ranger PHEV are priced from $57,900 to $71,900 (EGC), respectively.
