British-origin LDV (Leyland DAF Vans) has issued a recall affecting the Deliver 9 and eDeliver 9 vans in Australia due to a problem of sudden, unexpected airbag deployment.

Both of these vehicles are large commercial vans designed primarily for business, logistics, and fleet use. They belong to the large van segment, competing with rivals like the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

What’s the defect, and why is it so serious?

A manufacturing defect can cause the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) software in these LDV vans to have higher sensitivity than intended. Because of this, the driver, front passenger, curtain, and seat-mounted side airbags could deploy unexpectedly while driving.

If an airbag deploys without a crash, the driver could lose control of the vehicle, which may cause a sudden distraction or obstruction. This increases the risk of a road accident, serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, and injury to other road users.
